• Our tamariki we teach embody Māui in many ways.

• When responding to situations, we need to see the Māui energy in their actions - they are standing strong in their mana.

• When planning mahi for our education setting, we need to think about what is going to help our Māui tamariki learn best?

• Ngākau Kitea - who do we need to see?

• Ngākau Mōhio - what do we need to understand and be understanding of?

• Ngākau Atawhai - how are we going to respond - being kind & nuturing?

• Ngākau Tika - what's our solution? Reminding of existing tikanga? Establishing new tikanga? Something else?

Our tamariki are going to break rules, make mistakes and 'be naughty' - that's their job as kids.

Our job is to explain what they did wrong, and how they can do better next time.

• Every interaction with the tamariki in our care needs to respect their tapu & mana.

• As Kaiako, we need to be grounded and role-model the gentle and respectful ways we want our tamariki to grow-up with.

• As Kaiako, our education settings often include much tikanga, but new situations can arise which can require new guidance.

• Tikanga works best if its communicated clearly with our tamariki, and they are praised for following it.

• Showing special acknowledgement for tamaiti who go above and beyond in following tikanga helps role model that behaviour for others.

Reframe instead of viewing it as naughty/violent think are these tamariki actually breaking rules or do we need to adjust our environment to support their learning.
