Professional "Take Away"

The "take away" from my reading is that to take care of others, you have to take care of yourself. Taking care of yourself does not have to be expensive or time consuming. Developing simple habits and performing them daily can change your way of thinking and help keep burnout, compassion fatigue, and secondary trauma away. Originally, I thought I could compartmentalize my needs and serving those around me. Thinking about it, I know that the stress from either of those things will affect the other. Staying on top of your own self-care can also help motivate and benefit those around you.

Importance of Self-Care in the Helping Profession

I found it interesting that there are ethical standards for school counselors when it comes to self-care. One important reason for the helping profession to practice self-care is so they can stay refreshed and ready to help. It is difficult for individuals to give of themselves when they are not feeling at their best. Another important reason to practice self-care is so clients can see that the helping professionals model what they suggest. Whether it be initiating in self-care at home or going to a professional to help talk through some issues, if clients see that we are modeling the desired behavior, reluctant clients will be more willing to try something new and different.

My family loves being outdoors, especially when the weather is cooler. We love to take walks around the neighborhood, or walk around a park, or walk nearby trails. It gives us a chance to get out of the house and reset ourselves. We can focus on ourselves, each other, play a game together, and just have fun.

As a family, we also enjoy movie and game nights. Several years ago, we established Friday nights as pizza and a movie night. We have made our own pizzas, cooked frozen pizzas from the store, and ordered out. Once we are all settled in the living room, we put on a movie and just relax after the week. Sometimes we will play board games or cards while the movie is playing. It is something cheap and easy that we enjoy and look forward to as a family.

Pictured above are other great examples to promote self-care. After reviewing the resources for this assignment, I am going to try journaling everyday. I might start out with one day a week and work up to daily journaling. There are so many things that I am grateful for. This will help get me in the habit of recognizing those things daily.
