"Question the Question" strategy

I had taught my students to decode exactly what the skill the question is testing. This allowed my students to get into that particular skill headspace. For instance, once a student realized, "Oh, this question is testing to see if I can find fig language," it's a lot easier for them to focus specifically on that skill. Plus, it gives students the chance to be the questioner, which boosts their confidence.

Make connections with the text, and share those connections. Connecting with a text increases engagement. I always encourage my students to connect with and embrace the text, even if it seems to have nothing to do with them or if it seems like the most boring subject in the world. (We share these connections as examples of connecting, but I also emphasize that during the actual EOC exam, they have to connect independently in their own minds.)

From there, students can link the key term with their own understanding (e.g. author’s attitude means tone). I will also review how they can use scrap paper to help with this process.
