This allowed my students to get into that particular skill headspace. For instance, once a student realized, "Oh, this question is testing to see if I can find fig language," it's a lot easier for them to focus specifically on that skill. From there, students can link the key term with their own understanding (e.g. author’s attitude means tone). I will also review how they can use scrap paper to help with this process.
