Teaching students that failure and being vulnerable is OKAY. There is nothing wrong with failure. We go through failures in life in order to reach success. I already teach growth mindset vs. fixed mindset and encourage them all to have a growth mindset in every situation. I also teach them about famous failures and this connects to students they relate to. (Example: Michael Jordan got cut from his high school basketball team, imagine he never tried to play again? Where would he be now?)

Students are more vested when their agency is respected, so having them establish the collegial protocols of our class is essential to forging a trusting relationship. The culture of the classroom is founded on their own rationale and agreements. They dictate what they need to see and hear to support a productive learning environment. The class becomes a place of mutual trust, respect, and safety.

Students simply crave a space where people believe in them, their abilities, and their potential, and where their failures are not used against them but as learning and growth experiences-every day is an opportunity to be the best version of themselves regardless of the previous day. An environment such as this requires the educator and all scholars to support one another regardless of missteps.
