In this book snap, located at the start of the second chapter, I learned that the Nazis weren’t the ones to invent Anti-semitism. In fact, long before the Holocaust, Russians have history of being Anti-semitists.

In this excerpt, the author explains how parents can’t keep children from being in the Hitler Youth. Thinking from the point of view of a German child during that time, I understand how a child may decide to become a Youth despite the consequences and the negative connotation that many people associate the job with during the present. Because every person is the product of their environment, it is understandable that thousands of German kids joined the Hitler Youth because they were always surrounded with the racial injustice and prejudice that to them, it was the norm.

In this excerpt, the author explains the origin of Antisemitism. I chose this book snap because I wonder why Jewish people were so hated at the time. The book doesn’t include any evidence of them breaking any laws so it doesn’t seem they should have been so hated.

I chose this book snap because I wonder what life must have been like for the mothers, especially of young children, if they couldn’t see their children as much as they should.

In this excerpt, the author explains the need of young German soldiers during WWII. I chose this book snap because I think it’s important to notice the German’s side of the war in addition to the mistreatment of Jews. I personally noticed that almost everybody during WWII had suffered, including the Non-Aryans, soldiers all over the world, and even German citizens because men had to fight in the war and women worked in factories.

In this excerpt, the author describes what prisoners’ daily life was like after liberation. People were deathly skinny, starved, and had trouble eating. I chose this book snap because I wanted to highlight just how terrible the conditions at the concentration camps were. I don’t think I could ever imagine feeling like a caged animal that wasn’t allowed to eat or sleep normally.

In the chapter Germany’s Youngest Top-Rated Glider Pilot, the author tells about the discipline Alfons gained from being in the Hitler Youth, and a brief history of how he became a leader of the German Reich. I chose this as a book snap because it was my favorite chapter. For the first time in the book, the reader is shown emotion and some interesting stories, which made me want to keep reading.

In this picture located just before the 18th chapter, Helen and Alfons are shown together while conducting a lecture. I found this picture interesting because it is when the “Parallel Journeys” of Helen and Alfons finally come together, thus making the title of the book true after all.
