My great grandfather was nearly executed during the Communist Revolution, and my grandfather was nearly killed in local conflict. My mother was born in the middle of the Great Famine. All three of my uncles will eventually be sent to reeducation labor camps during this time. There is a small museum about the his cultivation of coffee on the island. I coordinated with the artist who sculpted his bust for display. My grandmother flew back for the ribbon cutting ceremony.

Where my family first planted roots, after immigrating in the 1980s. My earliest memories are of my entire family living in this home--my grandparents in one bedroom, and each of their children with their families in a single bedroom. My uncles had to build two additional bedrooms to accommodate our family. It was a very full and choatic house, but I have some fond memories of this rare time together. This is where my grandmother's home still is, a place that grounded me through a tumultuous childhood. I will have attended 16 different schools in the San Gabriel Valley area by the time I am in high school.
