DID (Dissociative Identity disorder) is a mental health condition where a person has two or more separate personalities. It is a severe form of dissociation, a mental process which produces a lack of connection in a person’s thoughts, memories, feelings, actions, or sense of identity (WebMD nd). Within the host body there are “alters”, people with their own identities that don’t always line up with the host body in terms of sex, age, or even race. It is as if the host body is an apartment and all the alters are tenants. The alter that “fronts” is the person who controls the body at the time; to change who fronts, the alters start a process known as “switching”. Switching may take seconds or on a more extreme scale, days.

Maintaining mental health is important. It doesn’t have to be a grand thing like strolling a fancy garden every morning and pondering things. It’s what you do for yourself, and how impactful that thing is. Everyone will face some sort of struggle, it’s how you keep going that counts. Resilience is a great reminder that just not giving up can be the first step forward.
