To save electrical energy, I would suggest a house plan with solar panels. What are solar panels?

Solar panels are used to absorb sunlight and turn it into electrical or heat energy. This is possible due to photovoltaic modules using light energy called photons from the sun which is then transformed into electrical energy that can be used throughout our daily lives. There are a few Pros and Cons of using solar panels. One of the Pros of solar panels is that the energy used is renewable as it is obtained from the star of our solar system, The Sun. The more intense the sun, the more electrical energy is produced. However, this could backfire when the weather turns cloudy or starts to rain. When there is no sun, there isn't any light energy to be absorbed and used. The Con of solar panels is that it can't be a reliable source of energy as it may be affected by environmental factors.

This brings us back to the placement of the house. As we all know, the sun rises from the east and sets in the west. As the sun rises, the light emitted by the sun increases by time as it becomes more visible. The sun is most intense in the afternoon due to its overhead placement which provides more light and heat energy to be absorbed. Towards the end of the day, the light emitted by the sun reduces in intensity particularly in the evening during sunset. This explains the placement of the solar panels in the garden and the roof of the house mainly facing upwards and tilting towards the east rather than the west. Throughout the day, the solar panels will absorb energy and transform it into electrical energy. If you were to count the normal hours the sun is emitting light on a usual sunny day excluding night time, you would be able to obtain a decent amount of electrical energy that can be used to save up cost on electrical bills.

Trees, ponds and shrubs help cool down the surrounding temperature around the house and provide more oxygen. A little shade around the house would help reduce the temperature which would allow us to use less electrical energy on fans and aircons. After all, natural cooling is the best as it does not contain any artificial coolant which may somehow be harmful to the human system. Do you realize that when you enter the forest or jungle, it would be cooler than the city? That is because the trees would give us shade and filter the air. The ponds around the house not serve a purpose of decorating the garden and making it look beautiful. Ponds would recreate a natural habitat around all the trees and shrubs thus creating a natural environment which acts as a natural coolant to the house. The ponds and trees are strategically placed to ensure a "ice box" like effect around the house to enable maximum heat reduction without interrupting the solar panels from generating energy. Overall, this house would be able to save a lot of energy.

A Model of A Solar House

From:Enoch
In today’s world where the cost of living is high, it is a wise move for someone to consider the conservation of energy for his home. One can conserve energy through the arrangement of the house. The following are taken into consideration for an energy saving house: i)arrangement of the house, ii)materials used for the construction, iii)solar panels, iv)cool environment and v)proper ventilation.

As seen in the diagram, the house is arranged diagonally. The reason for the placement of the house diagonally is to get best out of the northeast and southwest monsoon season. That way during the northeast monsoon season, the wind can flow through the long windows and during the southwest monsoon season the wind can flow through the air well. Of course short windows are placed on the sides of the house for a good flow of air.

The solar panels are mounted on the floor. The solar panels are placed on the south side of the field. This is because solar panels perform well when facing south. It is also an advantage that the house is in Penang as Penang was reported one of the states that gets the most amount of sun compared to the other states.

Due to the very hot weather in Penang, I have decided that marble slabs should be used for the floor and walls of the house. The marble will help cool down the house in this hot state. In addition, the solar panels not only absorb sunlight to generate electricity but the solar panels also help reflect heat. Other than that, solar panels can help to reduce the use of the government-generated electricity.

Plants are planted under the air well area. The area under the air well will not have a floor but instead it will be a grassy area. The plants growing there will give the house a cooler environment and give out fresh air. Of course there will be doors to part the air well area from the inner part of the house. Air wells not only allow good ventilation but also allow sunlight to enter in. That way the utilization of bulbs can decrease, therefore saving electricity.

Furthermore, trees and shrubs are placed around the house. The trees are planted, not too close to the house as the branches may block the sunlight from entering the house. The roots might destroy the foundation of the house. The trees are planted around the house to help cool the environment during the day. A patio is placed on the north side of the field, not too far from the house. A fountain is placed in the patio. The fountain give a cool effect to the environment. During the day, one can simply study, work or relax at the patio. That way the usage of fans and lights will not be needed as one can get needed light from the sun; and the trees, grass and fountain will make the area cool without the use of a fan.
