According to chapter 17, "This self-centeredness weakens the social ties that once united small
communities. Under capitalism, people are transformed into commodities: a source of labor and a market for capitalist products" (541, Macionis) This picture demonstrates all four levels being a different class, the man at the top has the most power because of his wealth, and as it goes down it depicts how much social inequality there is. You can see that people at the very bottom are portrayed as a source of labor.
