It is curious to compare the advertising posters about the WAAF with the real uniform that these women wore. In the posters we can see beautiful women with their uniforms made to measure, but the reality was very different, they used the same uniform as men, so they could not fit them.

On the other hand, it is very significant that women were not fully integrated into the RAF until 1994. This shows that the English government only took them into account in times of war. Noelia G.

The work that women did at the WAAF confirms the bravery and capabilities of women. Nevertheless, I would like to highlight the human side of this war that Joan Welch showed me through her story.

Some families from the towns close to where Joan was working offered their homes and time to give the women a break from their jobs. Joan got friendly with one family, she spent time with them and she could relax in the village. Once, when she was worried about her family, who were living in London, she tried to find accommodation in one village to give them some time out of the city. It was impossible to find a place, but this family offered her their home without expecting anything in return, and allowed her mum and dad to stay with them for some weeks. It is clear that it was a terrible time. However, this story shows me that everyone tried to help each other in the way they could. Katherine V.
