The first 38 seconds of this song by Kanye West is a good example of single note. Within that time frame, he is hitting the same key on a piano as if he is trying to draw you in before the beat changes to something faster.

The concept of single note is a good one because it's suppose to help engage the listener. Sometimes it will seem like the artist is just being annoying and playing the same thing over and over, but the artist is really trying to either draw in the listener or get their point across and send a message with that one note. Single note is important because it is one that many don't pay much attention to. Usually when people hear the same note or sound over and over, they tend to tune it out or stop paying attention, but the artists usually have a good reason for doing it.

"The stubborn note takes a spell off you. Many gods have been worshiped to its sound, and the repeated single note is itself a kind of supreme being"(Ratliff, Pg. 75-76).

"The stubborn note, for the listener, is its own phenomenon. When you listen to a single note sounded repeatedly and temporarily holding court, you are listening to either a form of resistance or play- or resistance as play--but not the language of dutifully developing and then circling back to sum up"(Ratliff,Pg. 74).

I agree with Ratliff about single note being important because it is a part of a lot of music and many don't see it, but it is important for it. Music with single note can help give it that special effect that it needs or that thing to draw in the listener.
