Stage 1: Trust vs. Mistrust

Trust is developed when a child's needs are met by their parents consistently. Mistrust occurs when their needs are not met, or parents are inconsistent. During this stage, I developed trust. The textbook says, "Baby develops sense of whether world is a good and safe place" (Martorell 2022). As a child, I felt that the world was safe, and I knew my parents would care for my needs.

During this stage, the child will learn independence and how to make their own decisions. If they do not have enough opportunities to learn this, they may develop shame and doubt. The text says, "Child develops a balance of independence and self-sufficiency over shame and doubt" (Martorell 2022). For as long as I can remember, I have not had confidence. I am also very dependent on others when it comes to making decisions. This tells me that I did not have enough independence during this stage, so I developed shame and doubt.

The child may either learn how to stand up and be a leader, or they may always feel that they are doing something wrong. According to the text, "Child develops initiative when trying new activities and is not overwhelmed by guilt" (Martorell 2022). I have always had social anxiety and I did not want to take initiative. I also always have felt that what I am doing is wrong. I believe this is because during this stage I developed guilt. My parents were very controlling and critical so it could explain why I developed guilt.

During this stage, the child may develop confidence in their intellectual abilities, or they may feel incompetent. The book says, "Child must learn skills of the culture or face feelings of incompetence" (Martorell 2022). From a very young age I have been praised for my intelligence. This has resulted in me developing industry. For the most part I am proud of my work and I know I am capable.

The child will either develop a good sense of self or will have confusion about their role in life. According to the textbook, "Adolescent must determine sense of self ("Who am I?") or experience confusion about roles" (Martorell 2022). During this stage, my dad passed away. I became depressed and anxious, so I did not do things that would help me form a strong sense of self. This is why I believe I have identity confusion.

Adults in this stage will either develop intimacy through close relationships or will experience isolation from a lack of close relationships. The text says, "Person seeks to make commitments to others or may suffer from isolation and self-absorption" (Martorell 2022). I am at the beginning of this stage, so I do not know exactly where I will be at in life when I reach the end. I am already engaged and live with my fiancé. If life goes how I expect it to, this relationship will grow stronger, and I will hopefully develop strong relationships with friends. Those relationships will help me to develop intimacy by the end of this stage.

Stage 7: Generativity vs. Stagnation

Generativity occurs when adults have a drive to leave a lasting effect on this world. Stagnation occurs when adults feel that they are not making an impact. The textbook says, "Mature adult is concerned with establishing and guiding the next generation or else feels impoverishment" (Martorell 2022). I am led to believe that I will develop generativity during this stage. Since I am planning to be a teacher and mother I think the positive impacts that I will make in children’s lives will allow me to develop this.

According to the text, "Elderly person achieves acceptance of own life, allowing acceptance of death, or else despairs of inability to relive life" (Martorell 2022). I hope that I will be able to make positive impacts on students, my own children, and others. If I do, I know I will be happy with my life and I will develop integrity.
