the skies bore witness to a baby boy who received not cheers or kisses as he was born. no. disappointed sighs and looks of dismay were cast upon ryeo kyungjun— the second son to be born into the fire nation's royal family.

passed on from generations of great fire benders who were blessed by jowangshin, the palace staffs would soon find their hands full from chasing around the second prince, who liked to live life on the edge (literally) since the day he could crawl. the blazing flames of a fiery passion is instilled in his heart, a sense of fearlessness and conviction glint in his eyes. though, he’d learn the hard way that there was no place for him in the palace.

his name meaning to put his family before himself was how the queen decided he was to be raised. there was no use for another boy, queen ryeo was not going to be the second queen to crown a king, not after everything she has sacrificed to build the great fire nation it is today.

too young to understand how the world works, kyungjun would always sprint across marble floors, enjoying the palace's grand area for it gave him space to freely run about; and oh, he races to catch up to his parents, a few meters away from him.

"mommy! daddy! good morning! come see me swoosh the halls!"

kyungjun greets them with a big smile but was reciprocated with their backs. not acknowledging his presence.

the queen was busy signing pacts, approving policies, whatever it was a queen's duty is— the young prince didn't care. he only wanted to play and for his parents to watch him.

there goes father again, disappearing into his room filled with boring paper sandwiches (books).

well, he should be contented with what he has, right? whatever he asks for, he gets. the big dog that his classmate walking the other day— kyungjun wanted that same dog. only that dog. and he got it. what else was there to complain about?

powers unlocked: first response to grief

at the tender age of 5, kyungjun was able to unlock his fire bending skills, mourning over the death of his very first pet in agony; he cried for days, begging and throwing tantrums for his dog to come home— and instead of consoling the tearful boy, his parents chided him for being a crybaby. he was supposed to be tough and strong, "get over it", it's just a pet that could be replaced. these added fuel to fire.

it was his first encounter at death and as someone who has gotten everything the moment he was born, the young prince could not understand why his pet was lost to the heavens forever. the only warmth that enveloped him was thick smoke that came out of the boy's body— kyungjun was suffocating himself from his lack of experience with fire bending. powers were unlocked, and his lungs almost collapsed.

adapting, self entertaining

the palace was a harsh place for a boisterous boy like kyungjun. which drives him to escape the palace grounds often. it all started when he was 6 and the back gate was left unattended. sadly, his little adventure didn't last long as he tripped over his own legs and was soon carried back by one of the royal knights.

well, he could always try again. he had the time.

his mentors would always chide him, demand for him to stay still and behave as his mother would. he was taught to always keep himself neat, puff his chest and hold his head high. but what about lessons that should be passed down by parents? they weren't there to teach him how to ride a bike, tie shoelaces, help with his arts & crafts work, give him tips to harness his fire bending skills.

school was fun for him; there, he made friends who gave him the attention he lacked from home, and would cause trouble together. there, he was their prince— or king— their leader, someone the kids looked up to. he’s never felt this proud before, chest swelling with pride.

whether or not he was only revered for his title as the second fire prince or because they genuinely thought he was capable and recognised his abilities remain a mystery to kyungjun. although, there was someone who never fails to remind him he’s not that big of a deal.

15-21 ⑆ rebellion

tired of the neglect, he demands an agni kai with the palace's best royal knight, eager to prove to the queen that he was capable of fighting a grown, experienced warrior despite being only 15.

the duel ended with his honour lost.

his moves were too sloppy and he was too emotional for his own good, forgetting to observe his opponent before striking.

since then, his cheeky and mischievous antics stopped. instead, hours of sweat, blood and tears were put into his combat skills and fire bending.

gone was the boy who seek thrills and spilled laughter so easily in the palace's halls. now, hardly a smile graces his lips. kyungjun didn't find satisfaction in getting perfect marks, perfect posture, winning games or even from successfully escaping the bulguk guards after taunting them for fun.

in its stead, he finds pleasure in ruthlessly striking his contender down with the fiery knife he conjures up. a glint in his eyes when he casts a lightning bolt at his foe. seeing them helplessly fall and lose to him stirred something in kyungjun and he continues to feed it, demanding his butler to send in more fire benders so he could train his skills by using them as his dummies.

when duelling with fire benders got repetitive, he demands for his butler to send benders from the air, earth and water nations, which immediately elevated the difficulty of their fights.

the queen heard of kyungjun’s rudeness, with no polite invite and just getting the soldiers to drag people away for his own entertainment. it was a crude way of training, engaging nationals from all over pyeogyo for his selfish self-designed proficiency programme and was enraged with the news. she makes no haste in storming over to the biggest dojo in the palace to deliver a tight slap across the young fire prince’s face.

could it be? at last, his mother is going to finally pay attention to him?

a foolish thought.

oh, it’s such a long and awfully lonely fall down from the pedestal that kyungjun puts himself on.

but, akin to the fire goddess' traits, kyungjun was not one to give up easily. he laughs the slap off, cheek still red (not only from the hit but also because he did get embarrassed) before yelling for the staffs to bring more men in. now, more than ever, he wanted to prove himself worthy to his mother.

that'll show her not to slap ryeo kyungjun.

military enlistment

there wasn't much the young prince expected from training in the army. it was just another opportunity for him to unleash the full force of his fire bending skills and regular combat skills on anyone at his disposal. another opportunity for him to pick up new moves and improve himself. but turns out, there was more to the military that kyungjun needed to learn about.

he was taught military strategies (focusing on using his brains and not brawns) and the importance of teamwork. the best defense could also be the best offense. it was a good breath of fresh air for him, finally befriending comrades instead of seeing them as rivals.

with new friendships forged and a more tranquil mind, kyungjun's obsession with being perfect eased up a little and he learned to focus on himself. while the shift helped him consider a more gentle approach than jumping recklessly into a fight, it didn't last long.

nonetheless, a successful chapter complete. he gains new followers he could use.

legal bound

despite his over the top antics, kyungjun was still well loved by the palace staff and had made friends— some like the siblings he wished he had (sorry ryeo kins), some he’s grateful they put up with him, and others he wasn’t too sure if they would remain loyal to him. whatever it is, he was contented with his little group of following; but it wasn’t enough to prove that he is capable enough to lead the fire nation.

once he completed his mandatory enlistment, kyungjun wasted no time in starting his racing career as a form of break. perhaps the dangerous rush of adrenaline when speeding on rubbers on the track would make him feel something apart from inadequate.

of course, he was stopped by his advisors and palace staffs; but when did he ever listen? he wanted to do something new— fire that moves so still isn't as exciting as fire that flickers and spits and licks every curve it could reach. kyungjun needed that. this stalemate with himself needed to end.

22-25 ⑆ finding one's path

it might not be the most esteemed job (compared to politicians, doctors, lawyers), but it is the most competitive and intense racing league in the world of motorsport, making kyungjun one of the most sought after racers in this generation.

the attention from the media is something kyungjun relishes in, praises and gushing from fans and admirers boosted the little ego in him. but was he proud of himself? his choice in career was frowned upon by his parents and sparked gossip within the nation— some glad that the prince could pursue his interest, others scorn over such a dangerous and useless job for it doesn't benefit the nation.

but wasn't the teachings of the fire nation to follow the heart and bravely chase after one's dreams?

they were hypocrites. viewing kyungjun not as an individual but a prince whose sole duty should be serving his people. but they don't know that he has tried countless times to prove himself worthy of the throne. the queen wouldn't even bat an eyelash at him.

when he finally won the championship, kyungjun thought he would be proud of himself and that his parents would immediately call to congratulate him, sing him praises and beg for him to come home.

they did not.

the pride in his chest deflates as quick as it inflated. none of the fame and victories could fill the gaping void in his heart. this triumph was his own to celebrate, yet something felt off. he wasn’t particularly satisfied or happy.

taking a break from the heat of the racing league, kyungjun makes his return to the fire nation and decided to coach young kids who had a passion for racing. a go-kart track was set up by him, naming it "arbiter of light", for all daredevils to get a taste of speed.

it seems to kyungjun that no matter how much of an effort he makes to prove his worth to his parents (especially queen ryeo), he would never be given their acknowledgement.

if he worked hard... the harder he worked, the more painful it becomes. then he wonders what was it that he wanted to do, and he ends up not knowing anymore.

has gotten fractured 2 times in his life

1. broken ankle: when he was playing basketball, got too competitive and mixed in his fire bending skill - jet stepping - in an attempt to block a goal. it resulted in him faltering, unable to stick his landing and the full weight of his body snapped the bones in his ankle.

2. colles fracture: during his time in the army, kyungjun got too cocky and challenged a general to a boxing fight. when it was apparent that the general was stronger, the prince began taunting him and ended up getting his hand twisted, the pressure so immense that it broke his wrist.

sneaks out of the palace a lot, starting from the age of 6. he doesn't make it very far out at first, only reaching the outer ring of the castle before he gets caught.

at 12, he was finally sneaky enough to reach the center of bulsil. wide eyed, bewildered by the bustling capital, kyungjun finds himself getting carried away and running into a group of gangsters who attempted to kidnap him. thankfully, he was fast enough (combined with jet stepping) to escape but his nanny wasn't too pleased when she heard this.

13-14 were his favourite, spent running towards the outskirts. he liked staring at the boiling rock and always imagined himself in a great prison escape. unfortunately for kyungjun, bulso was crowded with guards and he’s always taken away after a couple minutes of hiding in a tree/ cave/ bush.

the wildest escape he attempted was when he was 15 and left the borders of the fire nation in the dead of the night, straying off to the air nation. he didn’t get to see much of the air nation alone, barely 24 hours in and he’s caught, dragged away back home where he’s banished to his room for a week.

by the time he was 17, leaving the palace at any time was the norm for kyungjun.

when kyungjun was younger, he liked trying to fit himself in tight spaces, often folding himself in random boxes he finds around the palace. one time, he got jammed in a lego box and the palace staffs were making such a big fuss that the young prince believed he was permanently stuck this way, making him burst into tears.

did not learn his lesson and continued to squeeze himself in tiny confinements for another year.

kyungjun's found family group formed in 2001 when they were all in the earth nation for a visit to see the twins. all went smoothly until he decided to make a comment on the twins and as a result got chided, causing kyungjun to take off in embarrassment where he finds himself crying by the fountain. geon, saera and eunkyung were there and somehow, their friendship starts.

calls themselves the galaxy s4 (stupid 4). the greatest to walk the milky(run)way. together, they cannot be knocked down.

they were a unique bunch, each from a different nation yet, they complimented one another so well that any stranger would mistaken them as family.

when geon's and saera's first child arrived, kyungjun was jealous (jokingly, it did not develop too far) and teasingly called her 'it'. now, the nickname is a joke that backfired on the fire prince; along with many other childish comments he makes like "she's so ugly", "haha she fell", "she can't reach this, look".

aside from his one sided bicker with yoonseo, kyungjun adores the child and would often shower her with presents. his first 'big girl' gift to her was a toy car to match his racing career.
