-Five Year Plans

- Terror (Great Purge).

-Stalin's industrialization required everyone to depend on the government for everything, which gave him authority and power over them.

-This power allowed him to control everything in the government.

- Stalin set up kolkhozi, which were farms used to export the agricultural goods or used to make food in the new cities.

- Peasant farmers were forced to work as kulaks on the kholkhozi or find work in the cities.

- People lived under constant strain (fear of secret police, had to think about every word and action)

- People were taught not to voice their opinions in fear of gov’t disapproval;

-Great Purge eliminated “disloyalty”

- People had to give up their privately- owned farms in order to establish state farms (aid in the industrialization of their country)

- Anybody that interfered with or opposed Stalin's methods were seen as "enemies of the state" and were eliminated

- Anyone who opposed or questioned Stalin's method

-used radio to spread his policies & it was considered a convenient way for mass communication since even illiterate people would be able to understand the messages

-through posters, Stalin was able to spred his policies.

- People accused of disloyalty were treated as criminals and could be exiled, executed, or sent to the Gulag

- NKVD (secret police) controlled prisons and labor camps, using tanks and armored cars to suppress opposers to Stalin's rule

INDOCTRINATION

- Propaganda: was used to give people biased or incomplete info that would compel people to adopt certain beliefs or actions

- Mass media and education was controlled by the gov’t

- Arts & Culture: Expected to serve a purpose for the state, politically

CENSORSHIP

- Book-Burning: Communists burned or suppressed existing books that they thought were dangerous;

- People were taught not to voice their opinions in fear of gov’t disapproval

-"Rewrote" history

- The goal of the first 5 year plan was to increase the amount of exports coming from the Soviet Union and starting industrialization.

Second and Third Five Year Plans

-The goal of the second and third 5 year plans were to heavily industrialize the Soviet Union and increase the amounts of imports coming in from other countries. Technology that could be used in war.

- execution (shot in the head).

This caused people to fear Stalin.

- Stalin planted in a fear into the people that everyone was suspicious of each other.

- Stalin gained control through photoshopping out pictures of people and placing himself as the center of attention and gained the people's popularity when used for propaganda.

- Also eliminated previous Bolshevik leaders so his regime was secured.

- Stalin placed censorship which caused:

- Artists depicted Stalin in a white suit to stand out from the crowd.

- Churches were shut down and priests arrested.

- Taught people that the worship of God went against the cult of personality.

- Stalin's own family was scared of him.

- After Stalin's death, despite his ruthlessness, people still mourned for him.

- People lost a leader; Stalin had industrialize the country faster than previous leaders.
