The theme of The Cay is don't judge a book by it's cover. Based on what we read on page 35 the protagonist said, ''My father had always taught me to address anyone I took to be an adult as ''mister'' but timothy didn't seem to be a mister.

The theme of The Cay is do not judge a book by it's cover. The story states, "Timothy, are you still black?" Phillip asked this because when he got to the island he wasn't blind and thought of Timothy as an ugly black man. After about 2 months Phillip became blind and realized that Timothy wasn't a ugly black man, and was actually a kind hard working man .Philip realized that it matters what it on the inside and not on the outside. Don't judge a book by it's cover means that you can't prejudge something. In the end, Phillip learned that you don't need to judge someone or something by how they look.

The theme of The Cay is that it does not matter what is on the outside, but what matters is on the inside. On page 104 it said "Timothy, are you still black?" That shows that Phillip was becoming a dynamic character. He started to trust Timothy, and he was prejudice when he could see because he saw that Timothy was black. Why he asked if Timothy was still black was, for he saw the real Timothy not with his eyes, but with his heart.

The theme of The Cay is never give up. Phillip, the protagonist, started to work around the island more after Timothy died. In our version of "never give up" it means to keep trying and work hard at what you're doing. Another theme of The Cay is to be brave. Phillip was kind of brave at the beginning near the conflict of the book, and then he started getting braver towards the resolution of the book. Our evidence of him getting braver is that he jumped into the fishing hole (even though he was blind) to get lobster.

The theme of The Cay is you are not helpless if you believe in yourself. In the story after Timothy dies, Phillip believes in himself that he can survive all alone. In the book Phillip gets tired of eating sea grape leaves and fish, so he gained the courage to go fishing for langosta, which is a type of lobster. Phillip shouted, "Lobster tonight!"
Even though he was blind he still was courageous and got Stew Cat and himself food and shelter to survive. Phillip was a very prejudice character in the beginning, because he judged people of color before he knew them. In the end Phillip becomes a dynamic character. We think that the conflict is person vs. nature, we also think that Phillip was fearless and determined to get off the cay alive and with Stew Cat.

Timothy and Phillip were on the raft for a long time and then Phillip went blind on the raft. Phillip was so excited that Timothy saw The Cay he fell overboard and Sharks started to swarm. Timothy saved Phillip from the sharks. They made it to the island safely. Phillip felt helpless then he realized that he can do more without sight. Timothy dies during a hurricane and Phillip is left alone with stew cat. Phillip and stew cat were rescued from The Cay. Also Phillip reunites with his parents. He regains his sight, but has to wear glasses.

The theme of The Cay is never judge a book by its cover.
In the story, Timothy said,"...Why b'feesh different color, or flower b'different color? I true don' know, Philleep, but I true tink beneath d'skin is all d' same." Pg, 79. Timothy said this because, Timothy thinks skin color doesn't matter. The antagonist is the German U-boats because they bombed Curacao boats. The protagonist in the book is Phillip and Timothy because they are the ones both stranded on the island trying to survive. Phillip is a dynamic character because he learns not to be prejudice when he was before. Timothy is a dynamic character because, Timothy changed beliefs when he thought stew cat was a jumbi because there were no air crafts in sight of their island (in the devils mouth).

The theme of The Cay is nobody's helpless, you just have to adapt to a change, race doesn't matter, and don't judge a book by it's cover. In this case Timothy is the book, and the cover is his skin. Based on what we read on page 117 it says, "I went back to sleep, and this time when I awakened, I heard a meow. Then I cried for a long time, holding Stew Cat tight. Aside from him, I was blind and alone on a forgotten cay."

Timothy dies and it struck Phillip because he was not prepared for it, so then he started to rebuild the hut, he made a cane, and he made a spear for getting Langosta. I think Phillip is a dynamic character, for his attitude has changed towards black people. Based on our evidence, we explained why we think the theme of The Cay is nobody's helpless, you just have to adapt to a change, race doesn't matter, and don't judge a book by its cover.

According to the text, Phillip was thinking in his head that Timothy's nose was flat, and his face was broad, and his face couldn't have been blacker, or his teeth whiter. Phillip is prejudice against Negros because he was never around the blacks. Phillip was stuck on a raft and didn't know where his mom was so he didn't know how to react to Timothy.
