Nathan Feuerstein is a rapper from an impoverished area of Gladwin, Michigan whose parents were divorced when he was very young. He initially lived with his mother, but his father eventually took custody of him after it turned out his mother's boyfriend abused him. In 2009, NF's mother died of an overdose. NF started off as mainly a Christian rapper, but now considers himself a rapper who happens to also be a Christian. NF's career grew steadily with the release of his first two albums, Mansion and Therapy Session, but his popularity skyrocketed after the release of his third album, Perception. The most popular of his songs from this album was Let You Down, which is very different than most of his songs. NF was obviously not expecting his career to blow up to the extent it did from his most recent album, as he has since released several singles detailing the fact he was not ready for his sudden fame, including WHY. Throughout the song, NF speaks about the fact that he feels "guilty 'cause [he's] wealthy." This indicates that NF himself would be the speaker. Due to the song being after his sudden and unexpected success and wealth, the occasion of the song would more than likely be NF dealing with his sudden fame immediately after the release of Perception. The audience of WHY is NF's fans, especially those that have been there since before Let You Down, as the song is much closer to the style of his album Therapy Session than it is Perception and NF himself even says within the song "Let You Down's the only song you've heard of? Well then you're behind." The purpose of the song is a little more up for interpretation, as some see it as NF showing to his fans that the fame hasn't changed him or his style of music and others see it as NF simply detailing what he's really feeling after his rise to fame, and there is evidence to support both of these interpretations. I believe the general subject of the song is best described in the word "paranoia." The song's tone is definitely a dark one, with the music being eerie in nature and the surroundings dirty and grimy with graffiti on the walls.

The emotional appeal of NF's WHY is a mixture of self loathing and frustration. At the very beginning of the song, NF states "[He] [doesn't] trust the thoughts inside [his] head" and "[He] [doesn't] trust this thing that beats inside [his] chest." These lines also paint a picture of paranoia, as NF demonstrates that he doesn't even trust himself. The beginning of the song also has an air of confusion behind it, as NF states a series of facts about himself, each being an answer to a question of "Why?" to the fact stated just before. Eventually, the questions stop receiving answers and NF says, "Stop askin' me questions, I just wanna feel alive...", implying that NF constantly asks himself "Why?" in his everyday life and is growing tired of it.

The ethos to this song, and all of NF's songs, is quite simple to lay out. NF is the speaker of the song and it is obvious the song is about him. Most of the songs NF makes are about his own personal experiences and what he has gone or is going through. This makes NF the most qualified person to speak about this, as everything in the song is based on his own experiences and questions for himself. This can be further evidenced when NF says, "I've been doin' this for most my life with no advice" which demonstrates that NF has been writing more or less the same kind of music for most of his life and doesn't feel the need to listen to other people's opinions, which keeps his music personal and exactly the way he wants it to be.

One of the ways NF uses logic and reasoning to convey his message throughout the song is by emphasizing two points. The first being that he has worked toward becoming successful for a long time and didn't have a plan for what he would do if his career ever took off, and the second being him emphasizing the point that these are his own experiences so he would know what he's talking about the best. One example of NF emphasizing his first point is with the lines, "I could be workin' for 24 hours a day and think I never did enough..." and "Now I'm here and they look so surprised, well so am I..." An example of NF emphasizing his second point about his writing being his own experiences is in the lines "I know I like to preach to always be yourself // But my emotions make me feel like I am someone else // Me and pride have made a pact that we don't need no help // Which feels like I am at war inside myself but I forgot the shells // Hold my issues up for all to see like show and tell, // A lottta people know me but, not a lot know me well."

In conclusion, NF's WHY is a song about the issues NF has always faced and written about combined with the anxiety and paranoia he has experienced since his sudden success. The Pathos demonstrates the emotions that NF is facing very well, with his lines more focused around Ethos and Logos backing up, reinforcing, or expanding upon his points throughout the song. WHY is not necessarily all that complex of a song, but NF does a nice job of detailing exactly what it is he's going through without sounding whiny or needy about it while also sticking to the fact that he is mentally troubled and has been his entire life.
