This quote is the first turning point of the boy's journey in the diamond mines. A girazi is what the miners call a pure diamond. It was extremely lucky for the boy to find that stone, but soon after that, others start to become suspicious of the boy and about what he is trying to hide from them.

Book Review from Booklist

When Patson’s impoverished Zimbabwean family travels to their country’s Marange diamond fields in search of a new life, nothing but trouble awaits them. The father’s promised job as a teacher doesn’t materialize, and both he and Patson find themselves working as miners. Their lives are suddenly at further risk when the military assumes control of the fields. Patson flees and steps on a land mine, losing most of his left leg. Still, against all odds, he must journey to South Africa to rescue his little sister, who has been abducted. In hot pursuit is his bête noire, Commander Jesus, head of the forces that took over the mines and murdered hundreds of miners in the process. Why the evil commander is pursuing Patson can’t be revealed here, but suffice it to say, high stakes are involved. Williams’ fast-paced, tension-packed story is filled with cliff-hangers, perils, and improbabilities that are occasionally overwhelming and push the story, at times, dangerously close to melodrama. In the end, though, this is a satisfying and eminently readable novel from the author of Crocodile Burning (1992). -- Cart, Michael (Reviewed 11-01-2014) (Booklist, vol 111, number 5, p51)

I agree with this book review. The writer has explained how Patson is going through with his new, but short, life in the diamond mines. He has also written about how Commander Jesus, the head of the Army, takes over the mine and terrorizes the people there.

This book is told from a first person point-of-view. The main character, Patson Moyo, is a boy who has been promised to find diamonds in the mines of Marange, Zimbabwe. His story is told in the way how those working in the mines would see it.This is a good example of a first person book because it shows what it is like to live in countries filled with poverty and corruption.
