In the Whitechapel District of London, England on 31 August, 1888, a body was discovered lying on the ground in front of a gated stable entrance in Buck's Row, presently named Durward Street. The body was identified as Mary Ann "Polly" Nichols. Her murder was merely one of five very infamous murders that would spark paranoia and fear among the citizens.

In the days and weeks following Mary Nichols' murder, four additional murders were committed. The next murder was of "Dark Annie" Chapman. But, along with the murders, there were a series of almost 700 letters coming into the Police HQ and Scotland Yard, each one allegedly coming from someone naming themselves "Jack the Ripper." The "From Hell" letter was by far the worst one, arriving along with a box containing half of a kidney! The police then deduced that Jack must have anatomical and/or surgical knowledge.

Possible Causes

Many possible causes for the hysteria seemed to stem from the fact that the true identity of Jack the Ripper was never discovered. Many were lead to believe he was still lurking in the shadows. Many citizens began to fear for the lives of themselves, their friends and family. A great distrust in the authorities ensued, people believing that they were unprotected and vulnerable.
People began to suspect that minority groups, such as the Jewish and foreigners, were to blame for the murders leading to Xenophobia and antisemitism, doctors and surgeons were also suspected due to the analysis and deduction of anatomical knowledge involved in the murders. The murders were very well covered by the news which was read by many, soon reaching everyone. These are just some of the many possible causes for the hysteria.

In the midst of the chaos as the police were hunting down Jack the Ripper, the people of the Whitechapel district were restless to name a killer. All kinds of people were suspected, and just as many arrested. Furriers, butchers, doctors, surgeons, common folk, upper class gentlemen were targeted. The police even went as far as to declare Jack the Ripper a woman, or a deranged midwife. Nobody was safe from persecution.

On November 9th, 1888 Jack the Ripper allegedly murdered his last victim with the death of Mary Jane Kelly, but many other later murders were attributed to Jack the Ripper, such as the murder of Frances Coles on February 13, 1891. No date is stated as the definitive end to the hysteria, but I can say that to this day no individual was proven undeniably to be Jack the Ripper. The mystery and horror of the events has lead the Jack the Ripper story to still interest many individuals around the world.
