The podcasters (John Macdonald & Aaron Vigar) hook starts off with upbeat music and a joke to engage and reel the audience in. They follow this by including sound effects as transitions as they move onto the topic of the podcast “The bystander effect”, they provide an example of this effect by demonstrating a relatable example to not only their niche audience but any possible listeners. While the podcast progresses, humor, anecdotes and imaginary scenarios are incorporated as to maintain the audience engaged with the podcast.

 The choice of the thumbnail and title are the first things I base a podcast off. This specific thumbnail and title caught my eye as it had the well-known actor Kevin Heart in both the thumbnail and title. The title also showed the episode number.  

There have been a lot of episodes of this podcast so, which I like as if I want to watch more I can. On the intro they played a clip showing some snippets of previous podcasts. This got me intrigued as I saw what the podcast would be like and how entertaining it would be. I liked what I saw so I decided to continue watching. It also had a fun upbeat rhythm to it which I liked.  

The podcast was in quite a humorous tone which I prefer. Although it was a funny podcast, they still talked about real life things within the interviewee's life. In this specific episode they gave out good advice.  

They also talked about how Kevin became the man he is today and how he created his success which I found intriguing.  

Having a Capturing a thumbnail, title, and first few minutes of the podcast are vital to grab your target audience's attention and get them listening.  

 

Named “What it meant to be a Muslim in America after 9/11” was an episode that released by NPR (a non-profit media organization) on the 1A podcast, it revealed the realities behind the life of Muslims by exploring themes of personal experiences and trauma. This episode (released September 9^th, 2021, as it neared the 20-year anniversary of the attacks) is formatted as an interview podcast in which guests Asad Dandia, Rozina Ali, and Professor Deepa Kumar join the discussion. Targeted towards the muslims of America, this podcast aims to deliver the experiences of the 3 guests but to also express the idea of remaining resilient through difficult times where you as an individual cannot be seen as an equal. The podcast predominantly falls under the genre of society and culture. By utilizing creative choices and standout features, the podcast is able to portray a feeling of empathy and sorrow on to the target audience in which it helps establish more awareness within our society. 

 

In the 1A podcast hosted by NPR, the “Muslims in America” episode demonstrates stylistic techniques through an interview format to hook, entertain and engage the target audience. The podcast begins with real recordings of unknown individuals sharing their sufferings through anecdotes, each individual speaker for about 15-20 seconds before the recording cuts and transitions to the next recording. By incorporating an effective hook, the host was able to implement and foreshadow main topics and content within the podcast. Doing this helps target audience get a perception of the upcoming content within the podcast and sets the tone and mood for the rest of the podcast. As an audience it can be interpreted that the rest of the podcast will include inspiration yet upsetting anecdotes on what it was like to be a Muslim after 9/11. As for stylistic features, by expressing these recordings in a way where the audio sounds old and worn is an intriguing way to engage audience as it displays production values and substantial use of editing and sound quality which employs a sense sophistication within the podcast. 

For instance, Long skillfully paints a mental picture of entering his neighbor's house upon hearing a chilling scream. His words conjure up the tragic state of the house, describing in vivid detail the bloodstains and the depth to which shards of glass had become embedded in the man's hands.

The protagonist of the story fearlessly engages with a suspicious man, from the initial encounter involving a mysterious, damp parcel, all the way through the bloodshed and harrowing screams. The podcast “The Pessimist’s Archive” episode “The Telegraph” hosted by Jason Feifer explores many different topics and stories about the internet in 1800s. It is held in a panel show format supposing that they are having an interview with the people from the 1800s. The telegraph, which triggered many same questions and concerns that the social media does today, is the key see the origin of internet and the fear. This podcast aims to entertain the audience with the comic and informal tone of the host, as well as revealing the fears about privacy, information overload and moral corruption of the internet to the audience with suitable age to listen to this through the 1800s’s telegraph. 

Even though the topic, telegraph and it’s power to see the problem of the present is heavy, the host that says “Now, it's easy enough to dismiss this, stop slacking William Dodge” kind of words, is trying to entertain the audience with his sense of humor and sarcasm that audiences can easily feel the same way and get entertained. Moreover, as the podcast goes on, the host utters “…to bury Morse, not to phrase him” with his deep and low tone of voice which can be change anytime by using a voice effect. This emphasizes his wordings about the past and the origin while entertaining the audience with the silly and deep voice effects which means it give duplicity the topic and the podcast.  It is a theme that needs to be inform importantly to convey the fear of internet and entertaining to keep the audience at the same time.

“The TED Interview” uses the stylistic technique of testimony to leave viewers hooked for the moral/end of the testimony, specifically the testimony of the guest who was brought on to share his experience about growing up with the British school system as a disabled child. The interviewee shares the story of his early life, giving his testimony, and in between leaves small morals/messages for the audience. One of these messages was “Being a kid in this school, all the other disabled kids I knew felt normal. You know, they were normal kids.” The moral of his testimony here being that disabled children were in fact perfectly normal on the inside, and as kids, one really doesn’t care if another child is disabled or not. Testimonies like this keep the listener hooked and constantly questioning themselves about the morals of the testimonies.

“Desert Island Discs” is a podcast specifically made to attract the attention of a niche community through the use of a variety of stylistic features, more specifically narrative techniques and voice quality. This can be recognized instantly after the forty second mark once the introduction is complete, where it can be made out that the tone is informal and casual while remaining informative. After the guest speaker is introduced, there are a lot of comedy and light-hearted jokes created while using sophisticated language, for example “...”. Following, the niche group of podcast listeners can identify easily that however the podcast host and guest both use imagery and symbolism often while they are speaking, with a high level of sophisticated language, the listener can deduct that the podcast is mostly ad-lib, because of a range of reason, of the likes of that the podcast host and guest speaker rarely stutter or make mistakes, and the whole podcast is taken very light-heartedly. With the use of these techniques, this podcast is easily able to gain the attention of a niche community, because of its unique stylistic features and niche.
