Near the end of the story we see that the shirt Connie was wearing was green. According to archetypes green represents death, which could foreshadow the upcoming death of Connie, because she is going with Arnold.

Archetypal Situation: Good vs. Evil

We can see the struggle between Good vs. Evil many times throughout the story. The first example we see is between the mother and Connie, where Connie is obviously representing the good, and her mother representing Evil. Likewise, we see the struggle between Connie and Arnold, where evil can be seen corrupting the good and the innocent.

Archetype: The Villain

We see the common archetype of the villain in Arnold Friend. He is the villain because he takes advantage of Connie, because he knows that she will be unable to fight back. Friend will do anything it takes to force Connie to come with him, even if that means mentally tearing her to her breaking point.

Connie can be portrayed as the innocent archetype in the short story because she gets punished because she is pretty, and does nothing wrong to deserve being punished. Connie is constantly worrying about getting in trouble, and striving for her mother's approval of her.
