For the benefit of our lesson, we will use Minecraft and the different manipulative sets it provides. We chose Minecraft for a fun and engaging way to teach first graders.

Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).

Counting down instead of subtracting

-Some students may think that subtraction means counting down from the larger number, so when asked to subtract 3 from 8, they might say 8, 7, 6, instead of correctly saying 5.

Ignoring place value

-Students may forget to consider place value when subtracting. For example, when subtracting 8 from 23, they might erroneously write 23 - 8 = 15 because they only subtracted the digits without considering the tens place.

Confusing subtraction with addition

-Some children might mistakenly think that subtraction is the same as addition, especially if they have only learned about adding numbers before. For instance, they might add 5 and 3 instead of subtracting 3 from 5 when asked to do so.
