Then in 882 the grand prince decided to adopt a new religion which they chose eastern orthodox church from the Byzantine empire. The two states shared culture at this point until the mongol invasion in 1237-1240. The Kievan Rus was taken over and isolate Russia from the rest of Europe. During the 14th century the people moved to a prosperous city that was getting richer and powerful due to the Mongolian empire, Moscow. From its location it was the hardest to collect taxes from it and the weather was unbearable. In 1380 Moscow gained enough power to start expanding its power to other regions. Since at this point the Mongolian Empire was declining it was a good opportunity to liberate most of the former Kievan Rus. Thru the 15th century the new Russian state was increasing in territory and wealth threw battles, marriage, and purchases. Ivan III, grand prince at the time, renamed the land to Russia after the name Rus. His son Ivan IV or Ivan the terrible called himself a Tsar instead of grand prince and claimed that Russia is the third Roman empire after the fall of the Byzantins. the Tsardom of Russia was born. Until the 17th century the tsardom became an empire. The country was the largest in the world extending from the Baltics to the Pacific Ocean. Taking over the city of Kiev and had the territory of Siberia. Tsar Peter the Great wanted to bring Russia up to European standards of government and military.  Establishing autocratic government to Russia and modernizing the army to a European fashion. Peter the Great also took over the land what is now Finland and moved the capital to a city at the time was under construction, St. Petersburg. After Peter's Reign Russia became a great power with new industries and more philosophers. Then came Catherine the Great who, with the help of Austria and Prussia, took over Poland and invaded Georgia. Industrial revolution Tsar Nicholas II takes power, he is the last Tsar to take power. WWI comes and Russia was right in the war. Meanwhile people were tired of the conditions of their living space and poverty. Uprising happened from the workers and the peasants. Communist gained popularity throughout the land and with two revolutions became the government of Russia by one man named Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov also known as Lenin. In 1920 Russia lost land which became Poland and Finland. Russia was now called the Soviet Union and its main party was communist. By the time Lenin dies a Georgian man named Joseph Stalin took power. Raining terror on people with the secret police and mass executions with firearms and famine. Soviet Union enters WWII and takes half of Poland and a non aggression treaty with nazi Germany. Germany tried to invade but failed and The Soviet Union pushed German forces to Berlin, WWII ended. A cold war followed after with the country advancing in the space race and spreading communism throughout the world. In 1991, the country broke up into 15 smaller republics including Russia. Russia turns to a capitalist federation. In 2012, president Vladimir Putin annexed Crimea from Ukraine. Modern Russia is still one of the largest countries with its population going decreasing and GDP ranks 12 best in world.
