Child Labor was a cheap and effective way of getting done work that required persion way past the abilities of a full grown adult. Business owners would pay children very little and work conditions were often very dangerous. Going to work everyday was to put you life on the line. And if you had a problem with all this you lost your job, cutting off your income and almost certain death on the street. You're robbing them of their childhood.
Business view of there child workers:
"I regard my people as I regard my machinery. So long as they do my work for what I choose to pay them, I keep them, getting out of them all I can. What they do or how they fare outside my walls I don’t know, nor do I consider it my business to know. They must look out for themselves as I do for myself:"-Child Labor Scenario Doc.
The Environment inside the factory:
"Little girls and boys, barefooted, walked up and down between the endless rows of spindles, reaching thin little hands into the machinery to repair the snapped threads. They crawled under machinery to oil it. They replaced spindles all day long [and all] night through. Tiny babies of six years old with faces of sixty did an eight hour shift for ten cents a day. If they fell asleep, cold water was dashed in their faces, and the voice of the manager yelled above the ceaseless racket and whir of the machines. Toddling chaps of four years old were brought to the mills to “help” the older sister or brother of ten years but their labor was not paid. "-Child Labor Scenario Doc.

As the economy progressed people started to do more and more to get as much money as possible. People like Jay Gould and Rockefeller used cut throat schemes to drive their competitors out of business. These men and more like them were known as Robber Barons for how they gained their fortune through unethical means. With so few men in control of the market for some many things they were able to create monopolies meaning that the could increase the prices by huge amounts making everything far more expensive for the consumer. I mean you could go to the store with a dollar and by the time you get there whatever you were going to buy is two dollars by the time you get there

The mine wars fought in West Virginia was between the big mining companies and the workers/immigrants who were forced to work in terrible conditions. Deaths on the job weren't uncommon and viewed as inevitable. Workers were paid in company money so that they were only able to shop at the company store meaning that the workers there became reliant on the company for everything. When workers began to strike and petition for better rights immigrants were brought in due to the fact that they didn't really know there rights and were able to work for less. Over all it was a bad situation for everyone: Normal workers getting killed and then forced out of their jobs if they complained, and immigrants getting taken advantage of. And on top of all this companies would try to invoke distrust of the other group hopefully making it harder for them to get along.

Men would come home very very drunk and sometimes abusive leading to a lot of wasted money and crumbling relationships. The women supported amendment to end drinking through a amendment as the men's lives became more and more centered on the beer and other alcoholic drinks.

As people began to realize this problems advocates of change began to arise. They included: Unions, Muckrakers, and Reformers.
Unions: Unions were organized groups of workers who regulated working conditions. In the mine wars the big coal company were afraid that there workers would unionize and they would be forced to raise paid and improve working conditions. The opposition of the union with force is the cause of the mine wars. Eventually workers were able to attain better rights through their respective unions.
Muckrakers: Muckrakers are individuals how use the press the expose problems. A example of this is the book called "The Jungle" brought light to the unsanitary working conditions and poor safely regulation in meat packing factories a example of this:
"When they had speared out all they could reach, they emptied the vat on the floor, and then with shovels scraped up the balance and dumped it into the truck. This floor was filthy, yet they set Antanas with his mop slopping the pickle into a hole that connected with sink, where it was caught and used over again forever." -The Jungle
After Upton Sinclair published his finding the Pure Food and Drug Act was passed in 1906 causing a inspector to come regularly to the meat factories.
Reformers: Reformers pushed for the 18 amendment to start the Prohibition. They lobbied senators and other influential people until the law was passed. Though in the end it didn't really work out.

There were a lot of individuals who influenced the change of these times. They were individuals who people could rally around and could follow on to their goals. A notable individual in this sense in Mother Jones, she supported unions all over the place including the Virginia Mines without her in the mix the miners may have never risen up and therefore we wouldn't have the enviroment that we have today.

There's a lot to take away from this age in history. We can be mindful of what happened before as we go about today in our own world with the new crisis that present themselves everyday such as gun control and police brutality. We can also learn the importance of worker rights and keep in mind that everyone is a person no matter what their job, skill set, or what they look like. As we go about today we should try to prevent history from repeating itself.
I mean if we completely ignore what took place during this time how can be ever improve. We need to investigate things and not try to stifle the media because without the ability to publish one's findings how can we ever correct the wrongs in the world.
