We know this because the man's facial expression shows that he may be scared. We can infer that he may also be sad and lonely because of the two men seen in the painting. Perhaps they were together in a group but the men left him. The colors in the painting also suggest a melancholy tone because they are dark colors. 
    
This is an example of the kind of analysis I am looking for in your papers. Make sure you look closely at all of the different characteristics in the painting.
