It was designed as a democracy, but the Germans had never had a democracy before, and German morale had been crushed by the loss of WWI. The government was dysfunctional and had little support.

-Early Nazi work preyed upon the people who felt betrayed by the Weimar politicians and made them the scapegoats for the failing Weimar state. Nazis wanted to break away from the Treaty, as they had a basic drive for German nationalism and independence from the chains of Europe.
-Because of the government and the effects of the Treaty of Versailles, many people were open to the change in government, and many became more radicalized.

The Treaty of Versailles also gave most of Germany’s industrialized area to France, which cut a lot of production out of the Weimar and hurt the economy even more. This set the stage for a change in leadership in the new republic and created resentment for the current government.
