Involving Parents in SEL

I think involving parents in SEL is a great way to get parents involved. When parents are getting the same training that their students are getting in school they can use some of the same concepts at home. As one parent was sitting and working with students, I thought that even though he was just reading scenarios the teacher had given him, it was a great opportunity for him to talk with students and learn their reasoning behind why they would react to something in a certain way. Also, with SEL not being academically challenging, it may be less intimidating for parents to get involved with when they may otherwise shy away from participating in things that are academically challenging.

Parents that understand what is being taught and how it's being taught are better able to support their child at home. I also think that this allows parents to meet and interact with teachers in a more casual manner, allowing parents and teachers to build stronger relationships.

I feel like social and emotional health is often overlooked, and seen as less important. Also, involving families by having the students show how they learn about the topic was really neat. Parents were able to really see what their student is learning and how they are being taught.

They also learn the skills that students are learning on how to express their social and emotional feelings. All can benefit the skills being taught in the classroom. You are building those connections between family and school and making more of impact on all that involved.

Engaging parents as partners in their children's education is so important. In my experience, most parents really do want their children to be successful and want to help reinforce what we are doing in school. Whether we do APTT, SEL activities like the video, or literacy engagement activities, I think the important thing is to keep trying to build genuinely positive relationships with parents. If you can establish that partnership, and offer great and practical ways for parents to help their children at home, they will try.

From the video I loved the idea of getting parents involved whether it's inside or outside the classroom. I also think, by engaging the families it can give them a better understanding of what's happening in the class and give them tools to use at home, ultimately creating a better partnership between the parents and educators.

I love the idea of sharing SEL strategies to help parents with the emotional aspect of raising kids (because let's be honest - it's hard sometimes!). As stated in the video, it is important for students to know that parents and teachers are on the same page. Including the parents in what we consistently model to the kids is imperative to the strategies being used on a regular basis. As a bonus, the "home environment is apt to be more peaceful" and cohesive.

I think it's eye-opening for parents to see... even the dad was impressed. I like how it allowed parents and students to discuss with each other about big problems vs. small problems.....things that we may discuss in our own classrooms. These conversations don't just have to happen here but also at home. Great way to support teacher-parent-student connection!

While watching the video, I kept thinking this was so much like APTT. I think the connection and support from school to home and back must be strong to have a successful year. Parents really want to know what is going on at school and by including parents, we enrich relationships. I liked the activity of rating a problem from 1-5 (size of my reaction). This could be so helpful in so many situations.

SEL is so important in these days and times and I think a lot of parents struggle with actually knowing how to help their child navigate through all the craziness that these days and times are throwing at them because it is so different from when they grew up. Giving parents resources to use at home, while implementing the same types of resources in the classroom, is only going to better our students.
