This activity helps build phonemic awareness by instead of asking the child what LETTER is in the start of the word, what "sound" is in the start of the word. Then she goes into breaking down the word, "si-i-t" was one example the teacher gave, and the student replied "sit" very clearly. Getting the child to make those connections and fully sound out the word is helping them make and realize word structures. Especially working one on one with the student, it is making sure they have a good understanding of what they're doing and clarifying anything they do not understand as they are right in front of the teacher and can be corrected. They stay engaged and learn what they need to!

In this lesson, Ms. Applegate is teaching her students, specifically the little girl on how to sound out words and what the end result is, and what sounds form a word, not just the letters that make up the word. Although Yaseena had to be corrected once at the start, because she thought she was supposed to give the letter instead of the sound, after correction she seems to be thriving, well understanding, and engaged having this one on one learning with Ms. Applegate. I think Yaseena is responding well to Ms. Applegate's tactics.

She seems to be able to have and find the correct amount of syllables in a word and spell out the word correctly or fix the mistake if there is one.

This is allowing and identifying if the student knows letter sounds. I think the student has a strong sense of phonemic skills. But I get a feeling that she seems a little hesitant about her answers. Almost as if hse lacks the confidence for the skill.
