I also believe that the inspector is a symbol of hope as he demonstrates how those of lower social class can still have a voice when he 'overpowers' Mr Birling and beigins to create a strong impression on Shiela and Eric. In addition he managed to create an identity for himself which they all referred back to, showing his importance.

Priestley uses the character of the inspector to create tension within the play by using him as an embodiment of the socialist within society and depicting the characters of the Birling family within the interrogation which took place. In my opinion I think the inspector is the voice for those who are seen as insignificant and don’t have a say within society. “Millions” show how many people are going through hardships and may be struggling because of the upper class  and their unfairness.
