This is going to be the first lesson of the unit. I will have to activate prior knowledge and potentially introduce new information. This class will be dedicated to introducing the definition of a short story and what the elements of a short story are. (Setting, Character, Plot,Conflict, Theme, Point of View, Tone, and Style)
I will create a presentation that has each element explained, and will engage students throughout the presentation by asking them for their own input on what each element is / provide examples from readings they've already done.
-I then hope to do an activity with them that where i post either an element or an example of an elements and the student would have to either identify which element it was or provide their own example (could be done in teams / pairs)

Identify major symbols and discuss theme
Students will be given a worksheet with a picture of a symbol from the story on one side and what the symbol stands for on the other...Some of the boxes will be left blank so students will need to fill them in independently. For example, the stones in the story represent violence, so on the worksheet I may have a picture of a stone, and students would have to fill in what the stones represented in the story. (Or I could give the representation and students would need to provide the symbol)

-Go over worksheet as a group and have students share their responses

Raise the question to conclude - What is this story trying to tell us? How do these symbols relate to the overall message of the author?
