What is effective and purposeful about Chavez’s line of reasoning and argument structure? Chavez sets up a really good method of contrasting nonviolent and violent protest, and moves through his argument that it builds off itself logically.

| Violence will only beget two things: either more violence and death or workers will lose all rights.
|1.We will gain support if we appeal to nonviolent practices--we know people want justice for those who suffer and we want to act on that.
| 2.We have to be committed to nonviolence as more than a strategy--it is a principle that governs our actions and beliefs. Most people who care for others are nonviolent.
| 3.Although we do know there are some who are so frustrated by the injustice, they will choose violence if we fail.
| 4.To counter these frustrations, we have sought to involve many to participate.
| 5.This is why our nonviolent protests work--because we are able to avoid senseless violence even with masses of people.
| I6.f we won through violent means, we would be negatively impacted and we would lose our sense of humanity.
| 7.Violent success does not hold long term power--violence begets more violence and our people would suffer.
| 8.Just look at history--who would lose? Who dies? The poor and impoverished lose. They would die by violent means but ultimately for what? They would die in vain?
| 9.We are committed to nonviolent means because what poor people have is time.

Chavez uses multiple rhetorical devices throughout his article that help him build a really great claim and follow through with supporting evidence. He uses repetition in the word violence to show the importance of it in his article, he makes multiple references to MLK and even Gandhi which shows a sense of parallelism to bring the rights activists together in persona. He makes effective claims and follows them with supporting claims to keep his line of reasoning in tact and effective throughout the article.

He uses ethos and logos to show a sense of emotional appeal to the audience he even throws in places where the audience can connect and relate to him as a writer but mainly as a person.
