He is also a very loyal friend because when Audrey seeks refuge in Ed’s house he doesn’t take advantage of her and also takes care of her and make sure she is good before she leaves. Also Ed is loyal towards Marv because even though he hates the annual sledge game but still goes along just so marv is happy. Then With Richie he has to hurt him to make him feel better and that is an extremely hard thing to do to a friend but Ed is able to do it and doing so it makes Richie realise what he has to do to get somewhere in life.

She is also self-doubting, as she doesn’t believe that she deserves to be loved, and doesn’t want to love anyone because of her past experiences and in fear of being hurt. This is evident in the text as she only allows herself to have relationships that are based purely around sexual wants, and not about emotional connection. Ed Kennedy is constructed as the self-deprecating protagonist of the novel, one that is never afraid to expose his faults. His uneventful and non-progressive lifestyle has lead to the uneasy way he carries himself. In the beginning of the book, Ed reveals to the audience his insecurities. “My full name's Ed Kennedy. I'm nineteen. I'm an underage cabdriver. I'm typical of many of the young men you see in this suburban outpost of the city— not a whole lot of prospects or possibility. That aside, I read more books than I should, and I'm decidedly crap at sex and doing my taxes. Nice to meet you.” The abrupt and brutally honest description of Ed, by Ed himself, emphasizes his self-conscious nature.

This is how I [the reader] viewed Marv’s character, but it all changes when we get a deeper look into the complexity of his true character, when Ed is given the task of helping Marv we then understand that he is quite sentimental and truly values those who are connected to him. 
 
We see this through the beat down car – which has sentimental value and is a reminder to himself of his daughter 
 
The money – The money he was saving up for his daughter 
 
And the way he reacts to Ed helping him
