Before the Japanese occupation students learn English as part of their first language with the British people. During Japanese occupation, the Japanese took over the education system. As a result, teenagers in school were forced to learn Japanese language and cultures.

Source 1 tells me that " teenagers in the Singapore had to learn the Japanese language during the Japanese Occupation." Source 2 also supports the point as it shows " Libraries were stocked with books on Japan and its language and culture. " With that, students have no choice but to obey them. Some parents even kicked their child out of their school to avoid them learning Japanese language.

Thus, it shows that the teenagers have no choice to learn Japanese as Singapore is under the Japanese occupation.
