         <description><![CDATA[<div>Used to reduce immigration from eastern Europe. Stipulating an annual maximum of 3 percent of people from any country who were living in the US at the time of the 1910 census. This law also applied to Italians, Poles (Catholics), and Russian Jews. Restricted immigration to 350,000 people a year with exceptions for certain professions such as nurses, actors, lecturers, and doctors. Essentially outlawed the unskilled.<br>Created out of a reactionary desire to return to a culturally homogenous America.<br>Affected southern and eastern Europeans. &nbsp;</div>]]></description>
