I do lots of discussion work, often in pairs or groups of 3-4 first so that students can share their ideas in relative safety, and then I ask for feedback to the class. These discussions are often opinions on topics, answering a question or making a selection from a list (with justification).

I am also a fan of putting students on the spot with a 1-3 minute presentation, prepared in less than 5 minutes. Here I focus on structure and development of message, and with repetition the students get the hang of these points quite effectively.
