The slide says these elements don’t “appear as prominently as they once did” but I’m not sure that’s true. Go to any club setting and you’ll see breakdancing and DJaying, and graffiti is found everywhere in the country. I don’t think they’re less ubiquitous relative to their mediums, as you’ll see breakdancing and DJaying and graffiti in their possible settings, but rap is easier to encounter because it is so easy to play music in general

With all the societal and political backlash, people in the Bronx had little to no ability to be heard or helped and so Hip Hop was created to provide an artistic medium through which to speak to society. As hip hop grew, it unified more and more people and even became somewhat political.

This happened with hip hop culture where they were hall hit with poverty and gang violence as kids . They then came together and made songs about what’s happening around them.

Culture is born because people feel the need to find solidarity among each other, may it be through artistic, political, or historical camaraderie. It can she created naturally through the norms of individuals living within proximity of each other, or artificially by deviants trying to find others who share similar interests in their community. Nowadays, culture is developed heavily through social media, but even before Instagram and Facebook, word of mouth and the print outlets would help to spread artistic r political messages and change peoples’ ways of life.

The 4 different types of hip hop surprised me. When I heard hip hop before, I primarily imagined music and dance, and I never really thought of the visual art (graffiti) that existed in the movement as well. I always imagined rap, hip hop, and funk to be different music styles and it surprised me that they all fall under the same umbrella of hip hop. I also never knew that hip hop culture started so long ago in the 1950s, as I used to think that the movement was relatively recent.

Seeing that hip hop can’t be understood without its historical context, it made me wonder if rap music today is a mere appropriation, as most modern rappers likely do not know how much hip hop has grown over the years (with rap being a big part of the movement). But then I wonder, can rap truly be understood? Rap primarily would act as a way to give a voice to the voiceless, but every rapper is so different, and it makes me wonder if they are really voiceless anymore as it becomes more appropriated by the music industry.

I think it’s very important to realize how far hip hop as a way of living has come over the decade. In the 1990s, the east and west coast were divided with their style, and ended with 2 people dying. In the 2000s, people have learned to integrate these, as well as other styles of hip hop, in such a way that yielded new and exciting types of music such as crunk, hyphy, and indie. It’s amazing to see how much progress we can make when we set aside our differences to create something bigger than the sum of our parts.

A culture is born when people come together and share their ideas of ways they want to express themselves (most significantly through art, literature, and music). That culture grows and develops over time to give more and more people a sense of community and purpose which the postmodernist movement would often lack. Hip hop focused on giving a voice to the voiceless and the expression of different ideas through new and radical expression, and combination of different beats and sounds that one might often find in an instrumental, along with a vocal accompaniment spoken in a rapid and rhythmic way (rap). Graffiti, breakdancing, and DJing also allow for these new ways of expression. As more people got their voice heard, the presence of racism dramatically decreased, which proves how radical a single community with similar ways of expression can be.
