This is the introduction to Lipids as a macromolecule. Students in each section are general Bio students with increased numbers of EL students. Students were given two questions per slide to record information. The first question is a DOK 1 to show they understand the fact or concept, the second is DOK 2 to show they are able to apply the fact or concept. This was created using BRISK AI, it read the slide show, gave me the questions and I was about to tweek where needed.

To evoke critical thinking I have added some questions like these on tests. I don't necessarily expect all of my students to get the right answer, but it does make them think about what they need to do to get to the answer. I also use questioning during notes. Asking students to compare work on one problem we got right to one we didn't and why we may have made that mistake and what the mistake did in the grand scheme to make us get it wrong.

Scaffolding Critical Thinking Skills related to Interpreting Kinematics Graphs

Learning Target: distinguish between & interpret information shown on distance vs time graphs and speed vs time graphs.

We began with DOK 1 - identifying and defining key vocab words via note-taking. Then we applied these vocab words to each of the two graphs visually (page 1).

Next, we moved to DOK 2 - summarizing and categorizing the differences between the two graphs through a cut/glue activity (page 2). This activity was paired with a lab where students measured the distance and speed of various objects - monster trucks, marbles, etc. - and constructed graphs to track their motion.

Finally, the students utilized DOK 3 skills to produce their own distance vs time graphs for a day in the life of their favorite celebrity (page 3).

After the students completed their graphs, I scanned them and we had a class discussion about a few of them. The students think-pair-shared a description of the celebrity's motion that day. I also hand selected graphs that depicted common misconceptions and asked intentional questions to guide the students through potential improvements.
