Apes are mammals, like cats, bears, mice and deer's. The hair grows out of little pits in the skin called follicles, forming a layer that traps warm air given off by the body. To an ape, the tangle of trunks, branches, and vines in a forest are like a gigantic climbing frame that provides high-level walkways through the air.

Although they have great strength even with their bulk, Chimpanzees and Gorillas are mainly ground based creatures. Even though apes have great strength, they also have excellent eyes. Their forward facing eyes can pick up fine detail, judge distances, and see in color.

The fact that apes rely more on sight than smell may be one reason why they have little hair on their faces.
