Behavior Management Idea #1 - Rules and Procedures

Start right from day 1 - Rules and procedures are a necessary framework to set expectations for student behavior (Catapano, 2018). Creating the rules as a class can provide a sense of ownership for students and create buy-in to the process. Once the rules are agreed upon, a student contract can then be signed committing everyone to the rules. Procedures create a clear expectation for day-to-day processes. These processes provide a clear understanding of daily student responsibilities and maximize learning. The process can be as simple as be seated prior to the bell with notebook and pencil ready to begin reviewing from the last calls period.

Reference
Catapano, J.

A key to behavior management is cultivating an authentic relationship with each student. Research shows that the most powerful tool available to teachers to combat discipline problems is a good relationship with the student (Boynton & Boynton, 2005). Ways to develop the relationship are by:
* showing interest in each students' personal life
* greeting students at the door
* empathizing and listening.

Reference
Boynton, M., & Boynton, C.

Well-developed and comprehensive lesson plans will mitigate behavior issues. By crafting activities and instruction with little down time and maximized learning, keeps students focused on positive and productive behavior (Johnson, 2016).

When students feel safe and nurtured they are more inclined to participate in and learning and behavior issues subside (Dusenbury, 2012). Students should feel safe and able to freely contribute to the classroom dialogue. Ways to make students feel safe are by:
* creating a zero tolerance policy regarding bullying and non-supportive behavior
* encourage collaborative group learning
* allow ample time for students to answer questions.
When these steps are followed a safe environment is created and behavior issues are minimized.

Reference
Dusenbury, L.
