Elena Cortese        LITERATURE FOR ME

Literature for me is a set of works written by authors who wanted to express their opinions and their emotions trough poems or stories. For the readers is a way to escape from the reality and they have to understand the thought of the author and decide to agree or disagree his opinion. For me, as a student, it's also a better way to improve my english and thinking more in english like a real mother tongue because we use to speak in english but not to think like an english. I hope I will enjoy this new subject!

My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun (Sonnet 130)

William Shakespeare, 1564 - 1616

My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun;
Coral is far more red than her lips’ red;
If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;
If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
I have seen roses damasked, red and white,
But no such roses see I in her cheeks;
And in some perfumes is there more delight
Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.
I love to hear her speak, yet well I know
That music hath a far more pleasing sound;
I grant I never saw a goddess go;
My mistress when she walks treads on the ground.
     And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare
     As any she belied with false compare.

I really liked this scene because it’s very emotional and I think there are important sequences that can describe the meaning of love. It’s something special when you find someone exactly like you, it’s when you feel the right sintony with him her that you know it’s the right person, like when you listen to your favourite song for the first time, because you’re simply meant to be. But when there’s a heart broken in a relationship, you’re so confused and hungry that you can think to kill yourself for the sorrow. There is a mix of contrasting feelings and I loved it.
https://youtu.be/UmYEfF3We8M

THE SCARLET LETTER FILM

“The scarlet Letter” is a 1995 American romantic drama film and it was directed by Roland Joffè. This version was “freely adapted” from Nathaniel Hawtorne’s novel.
It takes place in 1667 in the Massachusetts Bay Colon, and draws attention to the contrast between local puritans and their neighbours, the Algonquian, during that historical period.
It particulary describes the sin of adultery of the protagonist, Hester, with the Reverend Dimmesdale, while her husband is away for work.
The title is given to the novel and to the film because of the big letter ‘A’ (for Adultery) that the woman is forced to wear by the puritans.
The film shows mainly the drammatic details of the secret love story between Hester and Dimmesdale.
There are also evidenced the courage of the woman to not confess who is the father of her baby, the cowardness of the Reverend and the cruel revenge of Hester’s husband.
After many events and prejudices, the story will end with the project of the new family to escape in Europe anticipated by the Dimmesdale’s death.
