Use the following questions to guide your response, but really we want to hear your personal thoughts and reactions to this chunk!

What experiences do you share with the characters?

In what ways is your family similar or different from those in the book?

What did you learn about a character or group of people that you have not personally experienced?

I don't really share any experiences with the characters,But my family is different from their family because we don't have bad living situations and my parents provide food for me. I can relate tho that I would have to get my own food some nights when my parents don't cook and they're too tired. And I can relate that my parents do drink a little but not too much to wear they are abusive or anything. What I learned about the family in the glass castle is that that no matter what they have been going through they still find a way to be happy and Jeannette see's her family as special and way different from others which make's her love her life more.

All those things were present in her life and impacted her life in many ways. She also had to deal with poverty, frequently feeding herself and taking care of herself and she didn't have any money so it was hard at most times to provide that for herself.

Find a quote in this chunk that stood out to you. Please also include a picture or GIF to further describe this quote.

Give context for your quote. What was happening in the story that made this quote significant? Who was speaking?

Why did this quote stand out to you? A quote that stood out to me in the book is ''I could hear people around us whispering about the crazy drunk man and his dirty little urchin children, but who cared what they thought? None of them had ever had their hand licked by a cheetah''. This quote stook out to me because it shows how Jeannette still finds positive in her dad even tho he embarrased their family with his actions and from what he did she don't pay attention to the negative comments from what the outsiders have to say about her dad and sees that her life is so special from others and she just appreciate the moment which was cute to me. The context of the quote takes place as a police officer escorts Jeannette family out of the Phoenix Zoo after her dad breaks into the cheetah’s cage. And her being embarrassed about other people seeing it shows that she has come to adopt her father’s belief that exceptional people don't have to be perfect all the time. And at the point of her childhood, Jeannette rationalizes that her life differs from other children’s lives because her family is more special than others.

Choose 3 Formalist Lens Questions to respond to. Your responses should thoroughly respond to the prompt in at least three sentences. 8) A piece of formalist Len that happend in the book the glass castle was the tone and mood of the main character Jeannette and her sibilings. They raised themselves and had to find their own way in the world. Because of the constant shifts in mood coming from the parents, the tone of the narrative and the dialogues was often sometimes happy, and fearful. 4) Figures of speech that was used in the book that stood out to me the most was metaphors. The main character uses rocks as the metaphorical concept to show why she relied to that so much. Jeannette shows a love for rocks her whole life. Rocks remind her of herself and how heavily influenced it's shaped by their environment, or for her, her experiences. 1) A recurring theme I keep seeing in the book is poverty. The author show how poverty impacted her childhood, causing her family to have a nice type of lifestyle to going down to another path.

3) How readers might interpret the text differently than me is by seeing how Jeannette dad is always drinking after a long day other people in different period of times might not see it as a problem but I see it as in addiction drinking everyday and spending the little bit of money they have on Alcohol instead of saving it and using it on things he needs.

5) Personal experiences I see in the story is about drinking. My dad is kind of the same with the drinking after a long day he would drink but he doesn't always tend to spend money on it all the time he can control himself compared to Jeannette dad.

2) How I value my perception of text is seeing how I grew up differently than the text. I grew up going to church moving around a lot because my dad is in the navy, and I would have to make new friends every time I moved schools. Also my parents did split up but I still get to see both of them and they both still take good care of me so I value that they both still take good care of me. Meanwhile in the text the parents don't seem to care about their children that much and just create a bad example for them and leading them into a bad path of their life.

A social issue that stood out to me that happend in the pages that we recently read was education. Since Jeannette and her family moved into their new house their mom sent them to a public school which I feel like was good for them so they can have a good experience at school and meet new people. Also moving into a new house gave them shelter to live under now and have resources like a bathroom and hot water which improved their health a little bit. The kids were going to school really hungry tho which is not good for them because their dad would find the hidden money and use it on alcohol. Instead of on them, Their dad has a really bad health issue and need to start using his money on things that are important like feeding his kids before school. Their mom is working hard and making a little bit more money that she tries to save but the dad just has an addiction and tends to spend it on buying drinks.

experiences I share with the characters in the recent passage is having to go to school hungry when I was a little bit younger. In middle school sometimes we wouldn't have break feast at home and I would have to go the whole day without eating until dinner. I got used to it but It was also bad because break feast is the most important meal of the day. My family is a little similar to Jeaneatte family because me and my siblings went to a public school as well instead of private. What I also learn Is that Jeaneatte mom is trying her best to gather money for her family and her dad is just wasting it all on himself instead of his family.

A quote that stood out to me in the chapter was “Too much hard luck can create a permanent meanness of spirit in any creature.” This explained that Erma was orphaned at a young age and shipped off to various relatives who mistreated her throughout childhood which made her mean and abusive. I liked this quote because I feel like that is true for people who grow up to be like that is because of who raised them and who treated them into turning that way,an I just think that is relatable to the people who are like that.

One of the social issues that happend in the recent chapter was the economic conditions of the character lives. I think this situation does determine the character because there making there own decisions that are leading them to their downfall in their life and they just continue to not want keep on fixing it. Like for example Jeannette father had found a Job then sooner or later got fired and because they already didn't have enough money that affected them into continuing going down a bad path. And he controls how he works suffeceintly. That situation led them to stealing dresses from the local clothing store so that his daughter can have something alright to wear.

A social issue that stood out to me in the recent chapter was the accountability of Jeannette's dad. Her dad has no accountability for trying his best to stop his drinking problem which will benefit him and his family a lot. And because of that it causes them to not be taking care of well and not being able to provide for everyone on how they're supposed to be. Her dad had got a job which was good for him then sooner or later got fired which caused them to having to steal to make money. Jeannette had also turned ten in the spring and for her birthday present her dad said she could have anything she wanted, and she asked him to stop drinking and he did. But a couple days later he got back into the habit. So I think for her dad to be a good father and make up his problems he caused,he need to be more accountable towards his children and his wife on really improving on his drinking addiction so it can stop him from hurting his family than it has

Jeannette was alone a person from child services came by claiming a neighbor had called saying her parents were neglecting her and her siblings. It's a different story for me tho my sister had told her counselor my brother was mean to her so they thought we were being neglected so they called cps to our house even tho none of that was true.
Reflection( why do people share stories)

4) I think people share stories because they have built up emotion about there personal life situations and don't really have someone they feel comfortable talking about there feelings with and want to write it out to express it in a good way. Also people like to make people feel joyful about reading their stories or having a connection in a way. So some people that share stories has potential to make someone feel good and seeing someone else is similar to them. Sharing stories can impact a lot of people it can bring people together and create a good bond just by maybe relating to whoever shared the story, There's many ways stories can be impactful to people over the world.
