Ethiopian women are known for their practicing of scarification to express their cultural identity. Women scar all over their bodies to create unique scars that they define as "beauty". They create designs using a knife or a sharp object to penetrate skin, and then use plant juices to create a slight infection;enough to make the wounds become scars. After receiving all the scars necessary required by tribe, the women then becomes available for marriage. Many tribes around the world practice different types of modifications like we do here in North America, but there concept is much different. The women of Kenya stretch their earlobes out so they are able to hang beads, bangles and ornaments from them. This cultural trend is making its way into Canadian culture as many people today are starting to stretch there original piercings to fit larger ones in. The people with the largest holes in their ears usually mean that they have been part of the tribe for a significant amount of time. Women in Kenya use their ears as a way to express themselves.
(ClickZoom, 2016)

Summary

Prior to researching beauty across different cultures , I was very close minded to the differences in our world. Now that I have researched I came to the conclusion that there really is no real definition of beauty. People all view it differently. Depending on what cultural group you identify with and surround yourself around will influence your perception of beauty. I found some of the practices done on women to achieve this idea of beauty to be disturbing but because I was not brought up around it, I have a much different view than someone who was born into a cultural who practiced some of these things. I feel many women follow, and will accept the norms pushed by society to fit in and not cause any trouble. Most of the beauty practices are done solely for men to be attracted to them and not for personal needs.
