Hot air balloons fly when when the heated air inside is less dense than the cool air around this will lift the balloon up into the air. Buoyancy is an upwards force that the air exerts and this helps hot air balloons stay in the air. hot air balloons use burners to heat up the air inside the balloon. the burner is usually fueled with liquid propane. the burner mixes the fuel and air and ignites the mixture which creates a flame underneath the bottom opening of the hot air balloon. once the air inside balloon gets warm the balloon will rise. the pilot controls the balloon by releasing hot air from a vent at the top of the balloon.

At the time of their invention hot air balloons were usually made of silk, which is suitable for the purpose. but it is very expensive and difficult to repair. modern fabrics have replaced silk with more lighter and stronger options. Most hot air balloons are made out of nylon now. Tyvek is sometimes used with experimental balloons, but its flammability makes it unsuitable for most purpose.
