Providence is one of Zaroff’s many tools that helps him win each of his fights. The quote portrays symbols as the hounds symbolize failure, while the bed represents victory and accomplishment. Throughout the story, Rainsford is being hunted, so the bed is the symbol of accomplishment over Zaroff when he sleeps in it.
