The two critical areas of Kindergarten mathematics that is a necessity for the building blocks to start relate to the understanding and describing shapes and space. When learning math, kindergartners will focus on learning about two-dimensional shapes. From this they will build on what they know to then move into three-dimensional and even adding in the mathematical vocabulary. This is important to have because it lays down the base needed for the students to understand geometric figures.

1st graders will build upon what they learned in kindergarten to start learning about geometric attributes. Geometric attributes is important for the students to understand because having a deeper understanding of each shape and their attributes allows students to start practicing their problem-solving skills. Students will be able to use their understanding of how shapes work and fit together to be able to put them together to turn two shapes into 1 whole shape.

Students are going to be building on their knowledge of not only two-dimensional shapes but as well as learning how to build shapes with other shapes. The students focus on the distinctions between the specific shapes to be able to tell them apart and name them. Students then build on problem-solving skills by using smaller shapes to build bigger shapes which helps with a student's spatial structuring.

Following their 2nd grade knowledge of their problem-solving skills, the 3rd graders will be focusing on investigate, describe, and reason about decomposing and composing polygons to make other polygons.

Students will starting learning about perpendicularity and parallelism while building their knowledge of classification by including the use of angle size. A key aspect to this is that it helps students to developing an explicit awareness of shapes and the use of vocabulary with mathematical terms. For example, classifying a shape as a right isosceles triangle versus a student calling it a right triangle versus a student just calling it a triangle. The information that they are learning is to be implied in various context to help ensure the students have a better understanding of it.

The concept of shape composition, decomposition, and spatial structuring should be highly developed by now. The students will be using what they learned about spatial structuring to start composing and decomposing three-dimensional figures.
Students will also begin to improve their math vocabulary within the graph/coordinate planes. It is important for students to understand what it means that a plot on the graph is in a specific spot and what that plot is really telling us.

Students will begin to form an understanding of multiplication formulas. This covers their past knowledge of area, perimeter, the coordinate plane, volume and more. It is important to remember that students will forget key points in a formula and it is the teachers job to help guide that student to ways to remember to do it. The understanding of area, volume and perimeter of shapes will be essential for students to master because it leads into activities that can be done with spatial awareness to allow students to build with three-dimensional shapes.
