He was very effective in conveying the audience because he portrayed himself as the ideal leader and his intentions were agreed upon by the big majority. Before breaking down and annotating, it helps to have background knowledge. JFK was one of the youngest presidents to run and be elected, and his imposing figure and inaugural address gave hope to Americans during a time when the Cold War was lingering and communists struck fear into the souls of Americans.
The example for pathos used:
Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty.
When broken down, JFK wanted to assert dominance in foreign affairs not by using force whenever he feels like it, but once America is acted upon, and no matter what the foreign opinion is, America and its liberties are to survive.
