This week's visual note focuses on the visualization of my brain and the brain of a friend with ADHD. The work represents how they're different but also points out similarities, such as colors and materials. Both are equally beautiful in their own way.

For the first weeks prompt I thought of my time working as a paraprofessional for 1.5 years in self contained special education classrooms. A big incentive for work and point of connection between me and many students was me drawing them pictures of the things they are interested in. To motivate them to do their work I would offer to give them a drawing. Or, if I could tell they were frustrated or just generally struggling to connect (most were nonverbal) I would draw them a picture. I drew this collection of characters and things that were some of the many drawings I had done for them. It always made me extremely happy to see students cherish these drawings and feel seen. these little drawings helped me realize that I could use my artistic skill as a way to connect to students with disabilities.

-Jackie

Prompt 1 (chapter 2)

What are some ways to help students develop empathy? Use art materials to draw your ideas.

I considered artistic exercises and activities that could be done in an art room to help students recognize and practice empathy. One idea was to pair students off to share about their morning routine. Then, students are to represent their partners morning routine in a comic book style, sequential drawing. I did this activity with my friend and created an example of what this could look like. This activity would have students considering the world from another’s perspective- what someone else’s mornings would feel like. Drawing itself can e quite meditative, and would allow students to consider their partner closely and “put themselves in someone else’s shoes”. Morning routines are also universal and somewhat benign- we all have them and they aren’t likely to be emotionally difficult material.

-Jackie

the emoticons I chose to represent what ‘self care’ looks like to me were a walking boot, my Nintendo switch with Skyrim on it, music notes and headphones, a paint brush, and a can of whipped cream.

I love to walk any and everywhere I can- it is a meditative and regulating time for me that is completely free and offers me time for thinking that I struggle to find elsewhere in my life.

I often listen to music while walking, but finding and appreciating new music is something that also brings me joy. I love sharing it with my friends and getting new recommendations.

In contrast, turning my brain off to play a video game also is an important self care ritual for me. It’s still stimulating- but it offers a nice break from the stressors of daily life.

I added a paintbrush because painting is another important form of self care for me. Besides long walks, “me time” consists of painting or creating in some way. I need to draw or paint something quietly at the end of a long day to recenter myself. Oftentimes I make little artworks for the people important to me in my life as a way to show my love.

Lastly, I drew a can of whipped cream to represent 1.) how much I love it and 2.) how I use shopping for little treats like whipped cream (or whatever is on sale at the time) as another form of self care. It isn’t about the “spending” as much as it is about the little joys I acquire around me- like adding whipped cream to my morning coffee because I can!

-Jackie

I constantly caught myself looking at him, to make sure he was comfortable or not overworking himself. After getting to know the student, I realized he was capable of caring for himself. And asking him if he was “okay” or “needed help” could be inconveniencing him more than helping.

The emoji I created for ways I take care of myself is about going to bed and getting 8+ hours of sleep. Sleep is important because you’re not able to function normally on little sleep. I am also very quiet and whiny when I’m tired so I try to avoid people seeing that by going to bed and taking naps. If I could sleep for days and there were no consequences, I would.

On Friday a 1st grader lost painting privilege due to their inability to stay still and aware of their body during carpet time at the beginning of class. He was very upset. He ripped up his red construction paper into small pieces and put his head down. I came over and drew a smiley face on one piece in hopes to cheer him up (I tried sitting next to him before that and it made him more mad.) He ignored me, but the student who was also at the no painting table looked at me and smiled. That student came up to me at the end of class to show me his artwork. I'm curious to talk with my co-op further about what she's tried with them and if she's open to allowing them to hold something sensory during carpet time. It's also very likely she's tried this already, but I'm interested in exploring other options because I'm not convinced the consequence for this student did the work that was intended...he left the room saying he hates art class.

My self-care emoji is nap time. I know sleeping stress away can be considered avoidant, but I do genuinely wake up feeling much better (so why not?) I think lack of sleep encourages stress, and catching up on sleep is my greatest stress reliever. I can easily get in my head and start spiraling if I allow myself to think too deeply into stressful situations. Taking a nap nips it in the bud and gives me a fresh mind to deal with said stressful issues. I also added my bonnet to the emoji because it isn't a good nap without it haha

For our first visual note, I thought of my second cousin, Geo, who is 4 years old and has autism. My family is not very educated regarding the ins and outs autism, or it just plainly, so I often seen how misunderstood he is within the family. When he stims, self soothes, or has "atypical" behaviors, they are always so confused or get annoyed and are short with him. I always feel really bad when I see this happen. So I try to comfort and be there for him, whenever we are together. He favorite thing to play with is bubbles, so we spend a lot of time blowing and popping them together. That's what this piece is about, his love for bubbles and his innocence that is so misunderstood.

Him

And I are represented as a venn diagram of blue (him), and green (me). While his life is greatly impacted by disability in ways that mine is not, he has largely grown out of the chronic back pain he had, while mine has continued to worsen all throughout my body. Most conversations of disability I can connect back to one of us, and inclusion and special education are very important to me because of what we have experienced. As a child, my brother was considered un-teachable and sent to a school for children with learning disabilities, who also deemed him un-teachable and recommended my parents pull him out of school permanently.

For week one I made my note about a student I worked with in special ed. The student had a seemingly endless amount of energy and when we went to gym class he saw this as the perfect opportunity to let it out. Even though at the beginning of class students were supposed to gather around and stretch before a group activity he would take the time to run all over the gym and seemed to enjoy that more than any other part of the day.

My visual note was mainly inspired by my observations of the students with disabilities being included in art class yet seperated from the general class. My Co-Op does an excellent job in providing modifications to her lessons if needed. However, there is a physical seperation from the rest of the class through the seating chart. It’s clear that most of the students see the students with disabilities as “other” and not apart of their class. There is little to no interaction between students without disabilities and students with. Which I believe could be helped by a change of the seating chart.

My visual note calls an experience with a student during an assembly. As students sang and rejoiced along with the play going on for them in the assembly a students put on her head phones to drown it out. "It's too loud in here" she pleaded "Is there somewhere else i can watch the assembly?" My Co-op sprang to action. She took the girl to the opening of the auditorium and into the hall where she found a staff member to watch her so she could watch the assembly through the door. This moment was powerful to me because it made me consider the policy in Inclusive Education that refers to least restrictive environment. Sometimes that's in the hallway during school wide meetings. When the volume level was comfortable for her she came back in and joined her peers. She knew how to self regulated, and just needed support from her teacher to do so.

This week, my visual note is a representation of the frustration I have been feeling so far at my placement. There have been many times where I have stated my expectations/hopes for the semester and my classes/students, and in a way I get laughed at or just down played. A lot of the times I get told my hopes are too high and the students will not meet my expectations-- and that is largely blamed on COVID. I have engaged in a few conversations with my co-op and fellow educators at my placement along the lines of "Ok, well then when do we start to get back to normal? Why can we accommodate and still have high expectations of our students?" Just because they went through something tough during their development that might have stunted them, doesn't mean we shouldn't try to uplift and challenge them, and ask them to achieve regular goals to live productive lives. They will not achieve great things if we do not give them the opportunities to.

I titled this visual note "it's all in the eyes" based on an engagement with a non verbal student and being able to communicate with him through eye contact. Thinking on the way people with disabilities have been treated historically, I wanted to touch on the parts of history when able bodied people were scared to look at people with disabilities. And if they did look at people with disabilities they look with pity, or for inspiration or with shame. It's important that in present day our gaze is informed by the past. Look your students in the eyes not at their bodies. Eye contact is especially important as a mode of communication for students with communicative limits but a best practice for all students. With eye contact i was able to have a conversation with my student without him needing to speak. I engaged him verbally and he responded with expression which i replied to by acknowledging his look and what i thought it meant and then he either confirmed with a happy look, or denied with a frustrated one.

This student has trouble staying on task and is usually distracted by his books or his computer. Today in particular, he began to get distracted because he lost the cap of his pen. I am interested to learn more about this particular student, as well as some others, and see how their art reflects their emotions, feelings, etc. I have noticed across the board these students seeming lost or off topic a lot during class. I am also interested in seeing how one on one help from me and my co-op will impact these students.

It was clear that they were very talented in art-making. When they started working on one of the projects though, I was surprised that they just scribbled over the whole project. He informed me later that he did that in order to just get to free draw where he cut out and colored an exquisitely character. I wish I had caught on to what he was doing.

This week, I was thinking a lot about how to connect with students who may be reluctant/detached/unmotivated/uninterested in clay and my class. It's a stressful point for me to be honest. Just because our classes are 80 minutes every day of the week. I really am trying to give the students a lot of freedom in the project/lessons that I have planned to keep them engaged and in hopes that making what they want will produce happy results for everyone involved. High schoolers can be pretty stubborn. Im hoping my silly and funny self can also be a factor in them opening up to me and the class. The choice to try though, and to challenge their initial thoughts/opinions/attitudes is a choice. I wonder if other high school teachers have the same worries/tips to counteract this all!

Since Thursday and Friday were half days for parent-teacher conferences, my Co-Op and I watched over classrooms that had teachers gone for meetings. I created this piece in the 5th - 8th grade special education classroom while observing their behavior. Together, the kids were fully themselves. They were playing uno and sharing their “we listen and don’t judge” statements. And they rushed to the lunch cart when it came to the front of their class. Seeing them interact in the art room and in their own classroom was extremely different.

For my visual note: I took a photograph of my friend’s emotional support animal/pet. My friend needs an ESA because they have anxiety and suffers from depression so some days they’re unable to get out of bed. Having an ESA is crucial to them because they have something to take care of and relies on them. If my friend doesn’t get out of bed, the cat will starve or not get proper care. The cat is also there to provide comfort for my friend to relieve stress/anxiety. I thought this was good to relate to students because some students may be suffering from trauma, anxiety, ptsd, etc. and providing them a form of comfort or support is crucial. School can be a triggering environment for people and having a learning environment that is accommodating and comforting while also productive is a good way for students to feel safe.

Gilbert Spruance is only a few blocks away from the school itself and unfortunately in the heart of the community. I'm trying to keep myself open and vulnerable to feel and grow into this with them. Looking for ways to give back or help the community. As trauma develops i think it's important to be patient. I cant predict how this event will effect my students but i can be open and ready to hear them.

For this visual response I decided to take time to figure out how I respond and deal with stress and being overwhelmed. One of the things I tend to do is organize and clean. Recently I found a bunch of art I made that had been hiding away collecting dust. I realized that I never hung up any of the art I made and decided it was time to change that. I put on some lights, music, and sat down and organized my art. During that period I forgot about all the stress and issues around me and I realized I was finally able to relax.

This week so far I have been thinking a lot about the kid's mental health. The first day I took over of the new semester, the fourth period class was just non existent. They were so burnt out and bored from listening to all their syllabi and what is expected of them, that when they came to my class, a much lighthearted class, they couldn't even engage. Then, on the second day of the new semester, they were already being told to pick new classes for next year/semester. And I just thought to myself, can they just not even catch a break for one day/week? Do they really always have to be looking towards the future every single day? For this note, I cut up one of their scheduling sheets because it was just so overwhelming to look at, for me who has no responsibility to fill them out or pick classes. So I can't even imagine how bombarded they all feel right now. I'm hoping that my class can be a relaxing haven for them. The second day went much better with much more talking and engagement now that they can relax a bit. I even heard one student say they thought this class was gonna be fun to a peer. That made me happy.

As I'm thinking of lesson plan ideas, I am also thinking of ways I can use my lessons to teach students about a bigger, greater idea than just art itself. Through this Notan project, students will begin to explore positive and negative not just in terms of image, but also in society. The term "notan" comes from the Japanese idea of dark and light. Thinking about this idea, we can teach students about their relationships with emotions, both positive and negative, and how we cannot have light without darkness at times.

When I’m feeling overwhelmed, just sitting with a pet, feeling their warmth, or hearing the gentle rhythm of their breathing brings me a sense of calm I can’t quite explain. With stressful weeks ahead of me, I want to make sure I pay attention to my mental health and what ways I can value it.

This entry is about one of the few students at my school with behavior accommodations (and also one of the students I am most fond of). He is in the 2nd grade and struggles with regulating himself when he gets worked up or excited. Since my art room is not connected to the school, students always arrive in jackets. I’ve noticed when he gets excited he rips his jacket off and either fiddles with it, or swings it around. Sometimes when we are outside he rips it off and teachers often yell at him to keep it on.

The frequency of this exchange had me thinking about unconventional ways educators may need to be accommodating. This student clearly gets overstimulated and is uncomfortable by the sensory experience. I think it would be acceptable if instead of screaming at the student (which he already gets constantly) we let him take it off, calm down, and then put it back on after a minute or so. It would be a way to respect the student’s individual needs.

Normally an over achiever, she has been struggling to get assignments in and even stay awake in class. She's been wearing her hood up every class, and I had the opportunity to chat with her about how she's been feeling when drawing together in class. She explained having her hood up "makes her cozier" and eventually we determined it can make the world 'feel smaller' and therefore less overwhelming. We were experimenting with different drawing pencils while talking, so afterwards I created this portrait of her with her head down and hood up and a small field of vision to capture the feeling she was describing with drawing pencils.

She is a first grader who is very into art and the creative process, however she has a very hard time sitting still and sticking to one task. We were working on writing/drawing cards for a teaching who was leaving, however Luna had a hard time with this task. My co-op has fidget toys and things to sit on to help the kids get some energy out while they do work, however even with those, Luna still wasn’t making much progress with her assignment. My co-op and her reached an agreement in which they broke the card down into steps. For every sentence she wrote or small image she drew she was able to take a break and play on the swivel chair with a stuffed animal in the classroom. After a few minutes she would come back, complete a little more of the card, then go back to playing. I watched her do this for 40 minutes and mapped out the route she took around the classroom on her breaks, with each pink circle representing a “break stop”, and the green circle being her seat.

Been thinking about watching the hour glass at Tyler from the sensory cart and the calm I felt after focusing my eyes on the drops of color. There's a first grade student who is easily upset and can cry a whole period straight after being triggered. It generally happens when he is frustrated at making an art mistake or when he is asked to stop drawing when he is not done yet. I noticed today that when I said something supportive to him while he was feeling upset, it made him cry out louder and bigger. I talked with my co-op after to understand more about her experiences with him too. She often encourages him to "calm his body" and this seems to help. She prompted him to sit in the calm down corner today also. What's causing him to be unable to cope? At what point does communication with caregivers happen or need to happen?

This week we did an activity involving automatic drawing, which is essentially just drawing without thought. Trying not to make anything in specific and instead becoming a more sensory activity. The surrealists saw this as a way to reach the subconscious and let it take over. I feel like this visual note represents how my brain has felt recently. Trying to manage one hundred things at once and being all over the place.

The spirals over the whole drawing are meant to show how overwhelmed I feel at the moment and the way those feelings of overwhelm can overshadow the good things.

A lot of students have been out sick, missed school for snow days, etc. As I begin to finalize my lesson plans and begin to teach, I feel more and more stressed by all the moving factors in my life. To help myself relax and practice mindfulness, I decided to create a simple linocut print which represents somewhere I want to be. Thinking about a sunny beach and hearing the sounds of the waves in my head help me to relax and ease my stress. I will use this image for when everything in my life feels uncontrollable, I can control this.

This week I was really inspired by Nick's note last week and his gesture drawing. This week has been really stressful for me, for personal reasons, and I just needed to let go a bit. The gesture drawing helped me focus in on something that wasn't already plaguing my mind. While I was looking at the students in my homeroom period just talking and laughing, it made me think about being in high school myself. Yeah they may be stressed, just as I was, but I am lucky enough to look back and have really fond memories overall. When I look back I don't see the bad, I see the good. And that alone is pushing me forward today and this week. Sometimes you have to take a step back and see the whole picture. Working with kids really helps you do that sometimes. We get just as much from them as they do from us. And no matter what is going on in my personal life, I know I can come here and at least one kid will make me laugh and/or one project will remind me why I do what I do on the daily.

For this weeks' visual journal I had encounter with a student with sensory issues. I do not know the extent or reason behind this student's sensitivity, but it was an opportunity for me to practice being adaptive. Students were using charcoal to sketch and this student kept making little comments about how unsettling this was to him. My first instinct was to brush it off and tell him he was fine, but I remembered how incapacitating sensory sensitivities can be due to experiences with students I have had recently. I asked him if he would prefer to use an oil pastel and when he tried it out it made him feel better. I made this piece to represent the experience he was having by scratching a piece of sand paper on regular paper until it was almost shredded (I find this kind of unsettling) and reflecting on how I felt and drawing the hands and furrowed brow.

She is apart of the autistic support classes for grades 5-8th. Her artistic talent is very apparent through her sketchbook and art projects. When I taught my lesson of “Gyotaku,” she saw the extra ink as fish blood, instead of a mistake or spilled paint from the tempera tray. I appreciated her creative outlook instead of dwelling on simple mistakes.

I over heard my co-op explain to the autistic support students that they can try their best, but they don’t have to complete it. I felt this was contradictory to her speech given about the worksheet, and how if the students didn’t complete it they’d get half a grade. I think when I create my own assessment sheets, I’ll create a modified one, to support the students the autistic support students. Maybe one with less questions!

They were only speaking in meows and were trying to mimic the mannerism of a cat. The other students at their table found this strange and instead of trying to be welcoming they were making fun of the student. My coop teacher got everyone else to focus on their work and leave the student alone but I could tell they felt embarrassed afterwards. Later in the day another teacher stopped us in the hallway to say "I heard you had a stray cat in your room this morning" and poke fun at the situation. It really bothered me that a staff member was told about the situation by one of their students and thought it was okay to then make fun of them with another teacher. I can't help but imagine how isolated the student feels when even their teachers think it is acceptable to make fun of them.

Everyday, I've observed him smiling, being happy, and participating in friendly dialogue in class. I used elements from a recent project to include things this student enjoys/identifies with. I was drawn to this student when my co-op said he was very different in 6th grade, where he was quiet and isolated. I am excited to learn more about this student and interact as I begin to teach more of my own lessons.

All of the grades are currently making artwork that is based off a black artist for black history month. First grade is doing Basquiat portraits which has been so fun to do so far. Then my majors are doing presentations to represent black artists in an assembly they call the Living Museum, which I am super excited to experience

For week 3 submission, I am sharing a drawing I made for a 5th grade student as incentive for them to complete their project. I told them if they stay on task and finish their project they were behind on, I would draw them whatever they wanted. They requested a fancy frog and we decided on this guy. I sat with them as they finished and we chatted. This is a student who often gets distracted and falls behind, so I did an old trick of offering a drawing done by me as incentive to finish, as well as me sitting in close proximity. This works well when I am a teachers aid, but when I am also managing an entire classroom of students I don’t think wagering my drawings will be manageable. If I offer drawing for one student, all others will want drawings as well. And how will I decide who gets one when? Do students only have to be easily distractible to get a drawing? What about the students who always remain on task? I love getting to sit with students and chit chat while creating (and giving away my doodles) but offering them their own custom drawings probably won’t work for much longer. Would love to hear thoughts!

For this week, I took the loose paper that students submitted for our beginning of the week reflections. This week I had them think about and write 3 gratitudes and 2 manifestations. After reading them all, I was kinda sad but happy. So many of their manifestations were set on good grades, getting into colleges, and doing well on tests. All that stress, though, was quickly turned around in their gratitudes where they reflected on much more simple, happier things. The more I thought about it, I thought about how they and I are so alike. I stress so much about doing a good job educationally and occupationally. But it's the gratuities that balance out our worries. I'm glad that I can try to at least regroup them and their minds/lives as I try to do for myself... and that I get a bit of a peak into their lives as well.

I typically ask all students to sit on the carpet to watch my presentation before demonstration. However, one of the autistic support students that doesn’t visit the art classroom very often was having a difficult time adjusting. I’m not sure why, but he would scream as hard, and as loud as he could right into the ears of the student sitting next to him. I was extremely surprised after he did it twice, and so I asked if his 1 on 1 could talk to him outside of the room. I really wasn’t sure what to do or think at the time.

I was having trouble thinking/reflecting on something that I could visually illustrate/paint/etc. so I resorted to one of my favorite forms of art-- collage. I have been having my students reflect a lot on Monday's and I read them over the week, and I always talk to my students in the mornings of my first classes and get to know about them a bit better/personally. A few of them had expressed how they were feeling burnt out and college is stressing them out. I tried to use some words of encouragement to let them know things don't always last forever, that better things and rest are in their future, and that ultimately, we should live life for ourselves and do what makes us happy, not what adults or systems tell us to do. Conversations and moments like these are what really push me in the direction of wanting to teach older students. This age can be really tough, and I want them to know that we as educators are there for them and can be a sounding board, and that we do really genuinely care for them and want to help.

This week I'm thinking about all the bits and pieces that come together in the art classroom and all that needs to be considered constantly/continuously/consistently. I'm struggling to teach and redirect unwanted behaviors when young students are on the carpet at the beginning of class. This week, some boys were picking on a student with autism (My co-op does not think they are aware of this part of her identity) and I did not see it until she was very upset. I know that I am learning and I won't catch everything all the time, but at the same time the conflict could have been avoided if I had paid more attention and stopped the interaction before it got to where it did. I own that accountability and hope to carry the lesson forward. My co-op helped and it was good to see her model de-escalating a bigger situation - they were on the verge of a physical fight. I learned so much in a matter of moments! Every day feels like that in some way or another - I keep trying to be a sponge.

For my visual response I wanted to show the art work I created with a students “messed up” aquatic scene. Yuhi, a Chinese-speaking student, started to cry after paint spilled all over his art work. Since no one spoke Chinese, I couldn’t tell yuhi that this project was experimental and not that important. I felt really upset that I couldn’t comfort him so I brought him a new piece of paper and wrote his name to show that he could start over. After my various demos, I cut out the gyotaku fish and pasted it onto the “messed up” paper. I might give this to him, I’m not sure yet.

They were telling me that they are learning about the beheading of Medusa in english class right now. It reminded me of the famous sculpture where Perseus is holding Medusa's head, so I showed them. I was able to get a student who doesn't seem to have much interest in art researching about sculptures because of a conversation completely unrelated to our class. It was wonderful to see students who do not often engage with art work on this project with me. We glued sequins to construction paper that I will cut into a sensory hanging artworks they can play with too. (This was my co-op's idea! She's so supportive.) I'm excited to also put these in the AoST before returning to them!

This week during class, I used our time with the adaptive tools to think about what I wanted to make for this week's visual note. I feel like I haven't had a moment to just be and think, so I took class time as that time to just sit and create and experiment. A lot of us were talking to each other about burn out and our mental health just not being the best at this moment because we are so spread thin. This piece to me represents that. I created a swirl out of colder tones, to represent the sadder, overwhelming feelings we may be experiencing. The use of dots also just signifies the repetitiveness that the day to day of teaching can be and feel like. That alone can add to the sense of burn out. But I always just try to remind myself that this is temporary, that I am learning a lot and growth isn't always comfortable to happiness inducing, and that I will be better for it all in the end. That feeling is personified through the slight warm colors of orange and yellow swirled amongst the cooler colors.

I focused on calming colors and a swirl pattern which notes how life is like a loop/cycle. We're all preparing to come to the end of a cycle, the semester, and move on to the next!

This week in class we spent time testing different adaptive tools for the art classroom and talking about our experiences. Many people feel similar to me- low mood, exhaustion, and overwhelmed. Something that has been helping me recently is routine. I change my nail polish around 1-2 times a week and I found that I tend to wear certain colors when I’m feeling certain moods. I’ll wear red jewelry and accessories when I’m feeling happy, purple when I’m sad, etc. so I texted out the dot markers and made this guide. My friend took a picture of this when I met her in the park on Thursday, and I had turquoise jewlery and nails at the time.

This week I did a quick sketch of the mobiles we are making in 5th grade. Both classes are inclusion with students in a life skills section. It was really cool to see one of those students be sad but pivot quickly when I said we couldn't get glitter out that day (he loves it so much! and used it last class). I felt bad saying no because he gets so into it, but I was not feeling able to balance monitoring the glitter section that day on top of helping other students with their mobiles. It was good in the end for him too because he was able to focus on constructing his mobile and finishing it - keeping on track with much of the class, and it's likely he would have only stayed at the glitter station if it was set up. Another student in the life skills section did really well with manipulating the wire and attaching his pieces and experimenting/problem solving after a quick 1:1 demo and some praise. It was awesome to see him play and get into it after showing disinterest the previous art class.

This weeks visual note represents all my lesson plans and ideas piling up. There are overlaps within it all, and it is to show the layers of teaching art each week. It is tough juggling each class for every grade and keeping track of where each class is in each project. I’m learning ways of being organized from my co-op and I think that is the key to it all. If there isn’t organization of keeping track of it all then it is much harder on us as the teacher.

I had blank paper in my notes/left over materials from last class and I think the statement "I need..." was oddly funny and ironic just because there are a lot of things I need. An overwhelming sense of things that I need. So I took a second to think about what I need and what would help me feel calmer and more at peace. I think we all feel so spread thin and could all use at least one thing from that list. It's a bit of a stream of consciousness but it did help in the end.

When I finished this piece, I was thinking about the past three weeks and the next week my co-op and I have ahead of us. We have been doing split groups of up to 12 kids on the wheel and 12 doing a hand building project, with us attending to and teaching one group while the other teacher teaches the other. It can be a lot with a lot of bodies moving about the room, hands being raised, questions being asked, needs needing to be met, etc. But we seem to have a good groove. It made me think about this concept of order within chaos, the blue checkered areas being the order and the green being the chaos.

A lot of great things happened this week at school with students and projects and I got good practice in pivoting with schedule changes, picture day and students not being able to paint, etc. In second grade I tried "drawing around the room" and "painting around the room" - a lesson that's often used at the start of the school year in a TAB classroom. This was great to see enacted, students generally had a lot of fun, and they experimented with mark making.

Today we did an exercise where we spent 45 minutes trying to make a bowl as "perfect" as we could, explored what "perfect" means, what implications and limits that word puts on things, and then we broke our pieces as a part of an exercise of letting go. for my bowl, I purposefully made my piece a bit wonk, but refined. I had some time left over so I carefully added a subtle spiral on the interior. I feel like a lot could be talked about/thought of with the addition of a spiral and what that could mean for me. But instead of the obvious, I think for the first time when looking at the spiral, I thought about whether the edge going in or the center going out is the beginning/end. That's something I'm gonna think about a bit more.

This week I am thinking about the student who I am focusing on for my case study. We talked about positive and negative space this week in his class. The assignment was to cut a shape out of a piece of construction paper at one edge and flip it. Then glue the cut piece on one side of white paper and the background negative space piece on the other. He got really frustrated at one point and really wanted to throw his paper out. Instead of throwing it out and getting even more frustrated, he walked up to me and communicated that he was upset with it and wanted to throw it away. This was awesome progress! We took it back to his seat together, although he did not want to, and talked about how he could alter the work so that he could like it better and continue working with the same paper. He did not what to try, I affirmed this feeling, and then asked him to try one thing and if he still did not like it, I would get him a new paper. He tried! He got back into making! He did not fully grasp the assignment, but did make mirror images with the construction paper glued on half the white paper. To me this is also a success. Progress looks different for every student! My visual note is a doodle of him in the style of his finished artwork.

When I came out of my vegetation my roommates cat decided to join me and as I began petting him, the lull of him purring put me in a calm trance like state and all I could think of making was swirls. When I was done I realized I made a whirlpool of colors and further made the realization that the slow swirls and choice of colors represented my calm zen state.

For this students were given a random page from the dictionary and had to pick a word to bring to life. For mine I chose seahorse and sea kelp and combined the two . I used oil pastel for mine and gave the students the option of using multiple different materials. Although this was a short assignment, both myself, and the students, had quite a bit of freedom to explore with this project. I, and them, had more fun than I thought and this is an insight into how to form future lessons.

My visual note was a depiction of tangled threads and stippling, which I did after teaching movement and stippling in class. I relate to tangled threads because I often feel haphazardly held together, or messy. I always like drawing interwoven string because they capture movement and can be dramatic, kind of like the art noveau “whiplash”. I drew this because last year in Science and Art of Teaching we had to create a hanging sculpture that represented ourselves, and mine was a mass of threads because I feel scattered and disorganized. Recently I have been feeling the same way with everything I have and sometimes fail to keep track of, so I thought about that while I drew.

Maybe I'm just pruning and coming back stronger next time. I'd like to think I'd be a jellybean succulent haha

This week, I have been talking to a lot of the seniors who are thinking about what they want to do after graduation. Most of them are feeling incredibly stressed right now because they are starting to get either acceptance or rejection letters from colleges. A lot of them still are unsure of what they want to even go into or study, or if they even want to go the college route. All of this pressure is on top of their schoolwork, sports, activities, jobs, and everything else going on.

This week I made this collage while thinking about how different art has become, especially for older students. Specifically the use of AI and how it can be both helpful and harmful to the creative process. Some students are really good at using it to further brainstorm their ideas or generate reference images if they cannot find one they like, but with the graphic design classes, there are also a few students who are using it word for word or generating an image for their final. I can tell most of the time, but it makes me wonder about the future when it becomes even harder to tell.

This week, I have been talking to one student in particular about procrastination. We both struggle with procrastinating, both in school and outside of it. Specifically, she has been procrastinating her college applications, so I've been checking in with her every day and she's been trying to set smaller goals for herself each week to get done. So far it's been helping her a lot. She told me she's been starting to use it for her art practice too because she has struggled in the past with art outside of class because she feels like she doesn't have time for it. Now, she has been trying to do a quick drawing a day.

For this week's note, I was making it after finishing my latest graphic design lesson plan. It has been a challenge trying to make assignments and projects that focus on aspects of design and using Adobe because I am not as familiar with it as I want to be. Having to teach and come up with lesson plans for it has definitely forced me to brush up on Adobe and get more comfortable with the softwares and overall ideas of graphic design and marketing.

I am definitely feeling burnt out, but I love seeing all the work the students are doing every week and feeling like they enjoyed and were engaged in the projects we were working on. As the weeks went on, I was editing, revising, and changing my teaching methods and lesson plans to try and better reflect the students skill levels and interests as I got to know them all better.

When making this visual note, I was thinking of my case study student Emily. I used tracing paper to highlight/play with the idea that what we see at first is not always the full picture. When I think of Emily, especially after getting to know her more, I think of bubbliness and fun and lightheartedness. She loves florals too. So at first, if there is no light applied to the piece (light can symbolize knowledge of the student) things look very plain and straightforward. But after a little light, who the student really is shines through.
