Chains

This piece was the one that had the most emotional meaning behind it, and completing it gave me such a feeling of joy and success. The girl pictured is being held back by three different hands and cannot go on to be who she wants. I went through a time similar to this and felt that I could not escape no matter how much I tried. Then I listened to the song "Chains" by Nick Jonas and was inspired/related to the lyric "tryin' to break the chains, but the chains only break me". This lyric is what I focused this whole piece on because I wanted to show that the chains had broken me too, hence the reason that the girl's arms are "breaking" (see photo to the bottom center). I have now liberated myself from the people who held me back, but still remember the girl who was held back as an example to never give up on myself.

City Life

In this piece, I really wanted to explore into a more loose and free watercolor style, but I wanted a vibrancy to it as well. Since I wanted to improve my art involving figures and people, I combined the portrait of a girl with the city skyline. I've always loved the city and one day hope to be an architect so I can create cities of my own. This piece was so fun to make and allowed me to explore parts of art that I had never tried before. I love how everything turned out how I pictured it and know that this is definitely one of my favorite pieces I've ever made.

Negatives to a Happy Ending

I was really inspired to work with negative space in this piece, but I wanted to incorporate something that wasn't so negative. So the opposite of negative is of course Disney! I wanted to work with princess we all know and love, but ended up keeping just Snow White as I thought adding everything else was too crowded and took away from the effect of the negative spaces. The simplicity behind the photo really helps draw out how the face and apple work together to create two separate parts that make one piece.
