Compassion and Gentleness Regarding Our Individual Journeys (Man/Nursing)

There is compassion and gentleness as we cradle a baby's feet. They're fragile. As we grow up, our feet become callused and hardened. Everyone still has soft feet inside. When they become a patient, they're especially vulnerable again, just like this child. Their feet have led them to us, and this part of their journey may last a few days to a few months.
"We are pilgrims on the journey
We are travellers on the road
We are here to help each other
Walk the mile and bear the load."
- "The Servant Song," by David Haas

Attentive Listening (Man/Health)

People like to share about themselves, whether it's their history, their experiences, the people in their life, etc. They have a tendency to vent, to rant, to want a listening ear--someone who will pay attention to them. We all want to feel heard, but most of all, we want to feel listened to. We want to feel our words were important, that what we've been through is important, and we want to feel seen. A patient is a person, not simply someone to check off a list of rounds to make--everyone's got a story. As much as a nurse is able to, they ought to listen with attentiveness and sincerity.

Praying for Patients (Nursing)

Personally, as this is my model of nursing for myself, I think praying for patients is important (done with them or in private by yourself). There are countless recoveries and healings that can't be explained with science. The fact that not everyone gets healed is also true. Considering holism, however, I believe one can always pray for peace in their patient's heart, for comfort, and for strength (for the nurse, the patient, their family/friends/loved ones).

Just as a clean, tidy room helps one's mind feel decluttered, I think having a piece of nature in one's environment can foster a sense of steady growth, relaxation, and healing. Just as winter ushers in spring, we can find new life in places we may not expect to see, even if our physical health continues to deteriorate.

A hand to hold. Letting someone walk on their own (however that looks like). Being there as support. Patients do not stay patients forever--they are there to heal so they can get up and continue life again as much as possible. Patients do not need to be coddled or babied. They have dignity especially when we clean out bedpans, see them scared and in pain, seeing and cleaning them from bodily fluids. Explaining treatment and/or procedure to them is actively involving them in their care process and helping them not to see themselves as simply a victim or recipient, but as someone who is regaining their strength.

ASMR and ambience videos have grown popular, used to help with studying, background noise to fall asleep, etc. In creating a healthy environment, I think trying to involve familiar and soothing sounds, smells, or feelings can be beneficial for the patient! (Ex: rain, cooking sounds, fire crackling, tea being poured, horses trotting down a cobblestone street, etc.)
