At this junction, the road is quieter, and the cyclist can see cars coming from Temple Park Road to King George Road Roundabout. It would be better if cyclists could safely be on the roundabout, as it is slower to use pedestrian crossings.

Crossing Temple Park Rd near John Reid Road

Young people find this arm of the roundabout dangerous because the distance between John Reid Rd and the turn for Temple Park Road on the roundabout is short. It is not always clear whether a car will turn down Temple Park Rd.

Ocean Road Issues

When Ocean Road is busy young people can't cycle on the path. The road is narrow with no cycle lanes, so they don't like to cycle there. Designated cycle lanes are needed.

Bike Rack under the Metro bridge

The young people say they wouldn't use the outdoor rack in the front of the Interchange for fear of theft. It would help if there were CCTV used there.

Greggs in the Nook

Bike Boxes outside rear of South Shields Interchange

The bike boxes are similar to most near Metro stations. They are 1) too small for the bikes 2) Require a Metro subscription first before getting a card to open the boxes and 3) There are not enough of them when a group of young people want to be out.

King George Road northbound pass Temple Park Road

Some young people have dyspraxia and would not feel safe using a cycle lane like this one on the road. Others said using the pavement is also a problem because people come out of their driveways without looking.

Chopwell Woodland Park

Young People like to go here for the mountain bike trails. The Powerline MBT is a red-grade- very technical.

Chopwell is far away so a train journey from Heworth to the Metrocentre might help. It is a two-hour one-way bike ride from South Shields, at least.

Sea Road near the car park

Cycle Lanes are needed to connect to the ones near Gypsy Green. The path is wide, but there is no room for bikes with pedestrians and cars.

King Street Pedestrian area, South Shields

Cycle Lanes are needed in the pedestrian area. Young people say they cycle in this area without complaints from pedestrians as long as they don't race or weave in and out; however, it would help if they had a separate designated lane. A youth worker also talked about their experience in a similar pedestrian area in Newcastle.

Bridle Paths near Boldon

Greggs inside the Interchange South Shields

Young people like to go to Greggs. This one is open later in the evening. Cyclists are allowed to bring their bikes into the building as long as they dismount first.

Path along Prince Edward Rd

There is a severe lack of bike racks in this area. Young people often have to use the nearby fence or a lamp post instead.

Hill Park BMX Track, Hill Park Rd, Jarrow NE32 5XL, UK

Built in 1983 following a petition from parents to request a BMX Dirt Track for young people to ride their bikes. The track is not maintained and is worn and overgrown in places.

South Shields Skate Park

During the summer, this park is busy with lots of young people, from very young children to older young people and adults. Suitable for BMX, skateboards, scooters and roller skates. Also available are: basketball, football, and parkour areas.

Land of Oak and Iron cafe

Chopwell pump track.

Good for everyone, also got a play park right next to it. It also has a white pump track for people taking it easy. It has an intermediate track for pros and those trying to have a challenge.

St Mary's car park

Northumberland Park Pump Track

This place is great for anyone who has an interest in any cycling discipline. Free and full of fun for any age groups.

TO Bike shop

Many incredible people meet here to fix their bike before going to Temple Park to go on a bike ride or to play many amazing games. The shop is opening soon to the public. We are also going to sell, fix and help you fix your very own bike.

The Cycle Hub Cafe

This cafe has toilets, good food and good coffee, perfect for a mid ride break. Young people stopped off here and had a break before heading back to south shields.

The Angel of the North

Young people rode to the angel of the north and enjoyed lunch admiring this monument, then headed back along the Bowes Railway trail.

football/skatepark

Here there is a skate park where many BMX riders and skate boarders come to have fun but if you do get bored you can rent out the football pitch next to it.

Prince Edward Rd, South Shields

Young people are forced to use the pavement in the Nook nearer to Temple Park. The road direction is one way in the wrong direction for them. Young people said that the path could be busy during the day. Adults have yelled and pushed them to get off the path; however, this section has no place for them to use instead.

Bowes Railway - Cycle Path

We cycled 9 miles (there and back) to Bowes railways. All the way up it was mostly up hill. Which also means that you get to have a fun time going downhill at the end. It is a good beginner route for all cyclists. The only tough thing to face is the long distance! The route consists of road work , parks , gravel, paths , back roads and some rough terrain.

Bluebell woods (Cleadon trails)

The name given Cleadon trails is because of it's skillful area consisting of 8 jumps. There are about 4 lines to be able to hit different jumps. Things to look out for is weather purposes as when wet the place becomes a slipping hazard. It is a small section of forest where people have created free ride jumps. These jumps are for intermediate cyclists. They are tricky jumps and you need some experience with jumps to be able to stay safe.

The Banana

This is one hill that is quite steep and curves as you get near the bottom. There are 2 small steps (drop-offs) on the run-off. However, care needs to be taken as the run-off meets a busy bridle path.
