Ponyboy's character has dramatically changed over the course of the book. He develops in maturity while interacting with Socs and in his understanding of Sodapop's situation. Ponyboy also gets less naïve as the bool goes on in his willingness to use a broken bottle against a group of Socs. The mindset, language, and the actions he takes all developed thoughout the novel, as Pony learns to become more mature and 'different" from the other Greasers, he understands whats right and wrong. After experiencing the death of Johnny and Dally's he really starts changing into a young adult. Therefore Ponyboy has massive difference from the start to now.

Ultimately, after Ponyboy became friends Cherry understands more about how similar they are with the Greasers, overcoming his tragic events and his personality shows how Ponyboy has developed throughout the novel.

Throughout the novel's storyline, Ponyboy must take challenges head on in order to 'break' through the mental barriers which he faces. Pony must restrain himself from shattering and deal with the unfortunate deaths of Johnny and Dally, along with how Ponyboy risks his life to save the school kids from the burning church and how he learns to reject the prejudice which he has heard about the socs in order to respect them for who they are. Ponyboy's character growth throughout the novel is evidently occurring and shapes him into a more mentally masculine person whom learns from his life experiences.
